I am trying to get RemoteFX working.
The Hyper-V host server is an HP DL380 G6 server with Intel E5540 cpu's. I have already verified that Intel VT-x with EPT is supported on the CPU.
The host server is running Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter edition. I am using an ASUS EAH5450 PCIe graphics card as my test. Even to this day there still does not seem to be any definitive list of supported graphics cards for RemoteFX so I have no idea if my card will work. I bought it off the shelf at Best Buy just to test RemoteFX stuff.
The client VM I am attempting to use RemoteFX inside is also Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Enterprise edition). Every RemoteFX article I can find only ever uses Windows 7 as the VM clients, but I am trying to use 2008 R2 SP1.
I have installed the graphics card and updated the drivers on the Hyper-V host server and all is well. I have disabled onboard video so the EAH5450 card is the only card showing up. It is properly listed in the host servers device manager. I have correctly added the Remote Desktop Services role with Remote Desktop Virtulization Host with Core Services and RemoteFX. (I also have the Remote Desktop Session Host feature installed however it is there only because when I added the RDS stuff it yelled at me about licensing servers, so I added the RDSH so I could point it to an internal license server we have. the Hyper-v host is not hosting any RDS sessions)
I have shutdown the 2008 R2 SP1 VM, installed the RemoteFX 3d Video adapter and turned on the VM. I have never received any kind of "unable to use console" message that some step by step guides have said I would receive. The console continues to work, however the mouse is a little sluggish. After the VM has booted I have upgraded the integration services and rebooted.
After the reboot On the Host VM the display adapter has changed from "microsoft virtual machine bus video device" to "standard VGA graphics adapter". I have also noticed after adding the 3d video adapter I see 2 unknown devices in my device manager on the host VM. windows can't find any drivers for them. If I look at their hardware ID's they look like the following:
VMBUS\{962a3c39-0197-4a38-a6ea-f901f47f3154}
I'm at my wits end trying to get RemoteFX working. There is a severe lack of good documentation for this feature.
