Remote Desktop / RemoteApp using LDS?

I've inherited an application that leverages Server 2008 R2 and RDS/RemoteApp to deliver user sessions.  In the 2K8 model we're able to execute this in a Workgroup security model, which helps keep things relatively simple for our Support techs and end users.  My task is to migrate this all over to Server 2012 R2.

It seems that RemoteApp (in 2012 R2) requires an AD, and this would potentially result in us having to create a domain on each system we're selling (let's assume the end users don't have a domain we can integrate with).  I don't view this as a favorable option due to the increase in complexity.

My question: does anyone know if you can use LDS (formely ADAM) as the "AD component" for delivering RemoteApp rather than deploying a full AD?

TIA!
