the property sessiondirectorylocation is configured by using group policy settings

Hello,

I am attempting to setup an RDS farm with 2 servers:

2 Server 2012 R2 RDS servers hosting Broker services in HA mode (setup and seemingly working)

both servers should act as session hosts as well, but 1 fails to become part of the group.1 server generates the following error when I attempt to add it as a session host in the collection:

the property sessiondirectorylocation is configured by using group policy settings

I can add and remove the session host role at will, no issues.  and the second server can become a session host without issue in the collection.  They are identical otherwise.  I have tried unconfiguring all group policy objects and then configuring various objects to no avail.  Any help would be appreciated.

All of a sudden my Windows 7 x64 computer is unable to connect to random Windows 2008 R2 servers via Remote Desktop.

I can connect to the same servers from other Windows 7 machines.

The only fix I've come across so far is this, except that key doesn't exist on either my machine or on the server(s):

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters
  3. Under this registry subkey, delete the following values:
    • Certificate
    • X509 Certificate
    • X509 Certificate ID
  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the server.

Does anyone have any suggestions please as I'm at a total loss what is happening here.

Thanks.

This has been solved. To any who find this post looking for help Look below for things to check.

Hi All,

We have recently run into an issue where when we try to Remote into a server it gives the error "this computer cannot connect to the remote computer". A few details and things I have tried.

Ensure the local firewall is off.

Ensure there is no network firewall in between the end machines and the server

This is only affecting one 2008 R2 server

No other machines can remote into it i have tried many different accounts which are domain admins and different machines.

The Terminal Services logs have no error messages besides the occasional "Failed to start". However, this error message has been appearing even when the service worked.

We have security for RDP set to high.

The service is connected to an operational NIC.

There are no GPO's disabling it.

The server has been restarted.

Any advice would be helpful. If you need anymore info please let me know.

License server traffic - Force to use port 443

I am building a number of farms that will all use a set of central license servers in a different network. There is some concern about the port requirements and someone mentioned they had heard it was possible to force license traffic (possibly via the gateway) to use port 443.

Has anyone else done this or got more information on how this might be configured?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Copy all of "My Desktops" to another Mac with Microsoft Remote Desktop v8.0.9

I have almost 1,000 entry under  "My Desktops" in Microsoft Remote Desktop v8.0.9 and I'm looking for a quick way to transfer all of them to another Mac.

I thought I could just copy the .plist file at:

~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.rdc.mac/Data/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.rdc.mac.plist

to my new computer and I'd be good to go but that's not working.

I also found the

~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.rdc.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Remote Desktop

folder and copied that as well (tho the folders here look to be empty, I see the folder names match entries in the .plist). Yet, "My Desktops" is empty.

I also noticed when I copy the .plist over to the new laptop it's 946 KB in size. I run the RDP client on the new computer and the .plist file size drops down to 10 KB in size.

I really do not want to export all 1,000 entries and copy those files over to the new computer. I've found that the exported files when run require you to enter the username/password verse automatically getting it from (I assume) the keychain.

Is there anyway to copy all my RDP hosts from 1 Mac to another Mac?

Thanks.

Per Device Licencing

We have a server (lets call it server 1) in our datacentre which is licenced for RDS on a per user basis. Our users connect to this via thier domain1 account.

We have another server (server 2),  in a different datacentre, in a different domain, it is not currently licenced and is within grace period for RDS.

Users jump on to Server 1 and then from there connect to Server 2 (using a different domain account than they used on server1)

I would like to licence this server.

Do i need individual user RDS cals, or would i get away with a single device CAL as all users would be connecting from a single server?

Thanks

Server 2012 refusing RDP admin connection (no licensing)

Hello, I am trying to remote into Windows Server 2012, which I did for months, but am now getting this error:

"The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license"

How can I fix this and why do I need a license server? I just want to log in to do administration, which doesn't require a CAL per below.

Do I have to acquire RDS CALs if I am only remotely administering Windows Server operating systems by using
Remote Desktop for Administration?

No. Up to two users may connect to the Windows Server operating system simultaneously to perform administrative
functions without needing any RDS CALs. Additional administrative users need the appropriate RDS CALs.

I am stuck right now. Any pointers please?

Thanks for any help.

2012 R2 RDMS UI Fails to load.

I have the following setup:

4 RDSH servers

1 RDBroker

1 RDWEB/Gateway

All are Server 2012 R2

I can publish up to approx 50 apps and the RDMS UI will still load.

When I publish all our apps 114 to be exact.  The UI will not load.  When I open Server Manager and click on the RDS section it tries to load the data and eventually times out with "Could Not refresh the list of servers" "Check the status of the following services on RD Connection Broker Server: Remote Connection Broker. Windows Remote Management and Windows Internal Database.

If I remove some of the apps the UI will open.....  I also have tried to migrate this to an HA Broker setup with the Database stored on a remote SQL Server, all worked until I published above about 60 apps then it still breaks.  Naturally there are no errors other than that one listed above.  I know we are not the only people using this to publish this many apps.  Any help out there?

Desktop missing from Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Server 2012R2

Hi All,

I created an earlier post related to this issue but while investigating I am pretty sure the problem is much different than previously described.

A few weeks ago we published an app on our RDS server, a short time late users began reporting that that the "Desktop" (Remote Desktop) icon disappeared from the RDS web portal. We have combed all logs and found nothing that would indicate what happened to this functionality and also applied all available updates and rebooted several times since this issue. Also, am pretty sure no admins had logged into this server for months prior to this so it is doubtful any changes were made.

Since our RDS engineer recently departed I am sort of stuck on this problem and learning as I go. Initially I thought it was a MSTSC published app that disappeared and have been troubleshooting from that angle by also publishing and RDP icon to the portal which has got users back to work but has presented some limitations and other problems (redirection of printers and drives). If I now understand RDS correctly, the Desktop is a core functionality included in the RDS deployment immediately after building the first collection and before publishing any application, if I am wrong here please correct me (would also appreciate confirmation of this theory).

Been working this issue for about five days now, would appreciate any assistance from others who have had same problem.

RD Gateway & Session Host Server Certificate Question

$

Hi all - I'm setting up a secure RD Gateway and Session Host for testing and development.  The RD Gateway, Domain Controller, and RD Session Host servers are all up and running.  Now, I successfully exported the SSL certificate from the GATEWAY and imported it into the client.  Now, I'm receiving messages that the RD Session Host server is not trusted. " The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified.  Do you want to connect anyway".

It is my understanding that all traffic is through the gateway - even though it looks like you have to specify the actual RD server you are connecting to in the Remote Desktop Client connection.

Do I have to have a certificate for the RD Server in addition to the gateway?

Thanks!

SSL questions for my RDS Gateway

Hello all,

I'm working on a project now which has five RDS servers, four of which are Session Hosts, and one functions as both RDS Gateway and RD Connection Broker.  I've got my Four session hosts setup as a RDS Farm using DNS Round-Robining combined with Connection Broker and internally I can access the RDS Farm with only a few issues, namely an error that

If I click Yes, to Connect Despite these certificate errors, I then get the same message again for another RDS Farm host.

Here is what I think is happening.  When I connect to rds.company.org, DNS has four entries listed, one for each host, so my connection goes to one of them, which prompts this message the first time.  This then uses connection broker to route to the most available host, prompting the message to display a second time.

My company ordered the SSL certificates for me, so now we have five of them:

Name
----
certificate.crt
Intermediary_Certificate_1.crt
Intermediary_Certificate_2.crt
Privatekey.key
Root_Certificate.crt

  My questions are this :

  1. What do I do with these certificates to get rid of the messages we're seeing?
  2. How do I then allow remote users to connect to this RDS farm without also getting these errors?  We have public DNS entries now pointing to the RDS farm, but externally, I can't seem to connect to my farms address if I put the name "remote.company.org" in my Remote Desktop Connection Client.

Thanks guys for any help you can give.  I feel like RDS is one of those lingering undocumented technologies.  I've checked all the usual sources before coming here.

Certificate in RDS Gateway and the Session Host Servers

Hello,

I have just finished installing a RDS Gateway in a DMZ and a Session Host in a LAN (both with 2008 R2)

I am reading some documentation but I am not sure whether I must install the same certificate in both machines.

I installed a certificate (from my internal CA) for the gateway, and then exported it into the Session host machine.

Could that be correct? . Thanks in advance.

%CLIENTNAME% not available when launching published application via RemoteApp

$

We are trying to get a published application to work on Window Server 2012 R2 that requires the %CLIENTNAME% environment variable. When logged in locally on that Remote Desktop Server the variable is available and works as expected. When we publish our application and try to reference %CLIENTNAME% we then receive an error that nothing is set for %CLIENTNAME%. I have checked the HKCU\Volatile Enviroment\ and I can see the session with the CLIENTNAME there.

If we change the application to use %USERNAME% or %COMPUTERNAME% than it will input the corresponding values, so I know it is reading some environment variables.

Our clients are Windows 10.

Server 2016 - Remote Desktop and Drive Passthrough + BSOD + Bugcheck

Afternoon all,

I have a few RDS Session Host servers on Windows Server 2016 with drive pass through enabled so users can use USB sticks from their local PC's to the RD session.

Since standing up these new Server 2016 RDS Session Hosts I have noticed that every few days they will Blue Screen with a bug check error in the Event Viewer:-

event log: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000027 (0x00000000fcb0027c, 0xffffdd0294bfb618, 0xffffdd0294bfb250, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 0372a8fb-86dd-4937-9a8c-aa155c72329c.

I have managed to isolate the issue to drive pass through when calling on \\TSCLIENT because when I turn off this option for users the server is stable for over a week now.

I have found 1 other person on the internet with this issue but his was with a normal Server 2016 install and was simply remote desktop'ing into the server so i believe the issue to be isolated to remote desktop in Server 2016 in general however when he reported it to the Visual Studio team as a bug the shrugged it off as a Windows issue.

https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/3146/debugging-managed-code-system-services-cause-rando.html#reply-form

I have documented my findings here:- http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2016/177575-server-2016-bsod-bugcheck.html

Has anyone else experienced this? I cannot find any flag from Microsoft to say this is an issue or that they are aware of this.

Windows 2012R2 RemoteApp & Clipboard Redirection (doesn't work)

Hi there,

we've got Win2012R2 Server with RDP services running and some RemoteApps published for end users who use Windows 7 Pro & Windows 10.

If users log in to RDP server using mstsc.exe tool they can use clipboard redirection w/o any issues.

If the same users use a RemoteApp which works on the same server of course then clipboard redirection doesn't work for them.

If I open one of these published rdp files in a text editor I can clearly see that it has all required features enabled such as:

redirectclipboard:i:1
redirectprinters:i:1
redirectcomports:i:0
redirectsmartcards:i:0
devicestoredirect:s:*
drivestoredirect:s:*
redirectdrives:i:1

I played with group policies/local group policies on both ends without any luck.

Would be great to get any help.

Thanks!

Network Level Authentication (LSA)- Inaccurate password expired message RDP

$

Hello all,

I am having an issue with a Hyper-V host. When anyone tries to remote into the server they receive a message that"The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted". At least 3 users are Domain Admins (with recently changed passwords) so I do not believe it is the user accounts. We are able to remote into other servers without issue but this particular server does not agree that the passwords of any users is current. I have disabled NLA and I am able to get into the server but our GPO will not leave this setting turned off. Also, the VMs that are on the server are giving the same error when trying to log into them. Is there some setting that I am missing that needs to be reset so that the server does not assume that all logon attempts via RDS have an expired password?

The settings for this terminal server cannot be retrieved. The remote server does not support running Terminal Services Configuration Tool remotely.

I'm trying to change a couple of options on one of our TS but when I go into the Terminal Services Configuration I get the following error:

The settings for this terminal server cannot be retrieved.  The remote server does not support running Terminal Services Configuration Tool remotely.

The thing is..... I'm not running it remotely, this on trying to retrieve the settings on the local machine.

I get the same error when trying to run it from within the mmc or by just running tsconfig.msc

The server is running Windows Server 2008 Std SP2 x64

Any ideas why it won't run?

Cheers

Adam.
