Collection Icon Appears and Dissappears Radomly - RDWEB, Remote Desktop Web Access, Work Resources, RemoteApp And Desktops, .

Hello,

RE: RDWEB, Remote Desktop Web Access, Work Resources, RemoteApp And Desktops, Collection Icon Appears and Dissappears Radomly.

Does anyone know what makes this icon appear or not appear in the RemoteApp and Desktops Current Folder:/ ?

Depending on what emotional state the system is in, one of these states appear both internally and externally.

The Active-X add-on is installed and enabled on each of these machines.

I have found that if I go into IE:

1.) Internet Options->Advanced Tab->Reset Advanced Settings

2.) Internet Options->Advanced Tab->RESET + Delete Personal Settings.

3.) Internet Options -> Security Tab->Set all the securities to as low as possible and turn off protected mode.

Most of the time, the icon will appear.

But this is of course not a solution, just a temporary work around to a real headache.

Of course, my trusted sites contains all the necessary //*.domain.com,http://*.domain.com, https://*.domain.com... And my intranet contains:  *.domain.local,file://*.domain.local, And all the obligatory policies associated to define the domain and local UNCs.

Everything else seems to be working once the Icon appears.

So any information on what makes the miracle of that icon appear or not, would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Robert

RemoteFX USB direction not working

My host system is Win10 Pro x64, and my target system is Win10 Enterprise N x86 in a Hyper-V gen 1 VM. I have enabled the various group policy settings to enable RemoteFX on both the host and client, and in the Local Devices and Resources dialog I see "Other supported RemoteFX USB Devices", and I select a few of them but they do not appear in the target VM nor does the little computer icon show up on the connection bar. Also, if I use Device Manager on the host to look at the driver stack for the devices I'm trying to remote to the target, I don't see an TS filter drivers loaded. On the target, I have enabled "Allow RDP redirection of other supported RemoteFX USB devices from this computer"

In the RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS log there are some event 226, 227 and 228 (and lots of information events), but nothing seems directly related to surfacing devices via RemoteFX

What am I missing? How do I troubleshoot this crap?

Using a Server 2016 Server as the UPD location for a 2012R2 RDS farm

Is this a supported solution? I haven't been able to find any guidance as of yet.

The customer does not yet have 2016 RDS CALs (has 2012 RDS CALs) but would like to future proof the solution as much as possible in the Interim.

RDP and left-handed mouse users

Hi there,

I'm a left-handed person. So I use the mouse with my left hand and naturally I use "Switch primary and secondary buttons" mouse control panel option.

When it comes to RDP connections, I almost always connect to the desktops where "Switch primary and secondary buttons" is set for right handed people. When I'm inside an RDP session the mouse stops respecting my mouse settings and apply guest desktop settings which creates a lot of confusion to me.

Is there a way to setup my RDP client so that it automatically handles right vs. left buttons translation ?

Publish RD Sessions to workstations via RD Web Access

Hi,

I have a few users who need to connect from home to their own workstations. I am currently using RD gateway 2012 r2 to allow the connection.  Is there  a way to Publish the workstations using RD web Access? If so, is thee also a way to only display the workstation they are allowed to connect to on the web access page?

Thank you very much.

Windows RDS 2012 - Single sign-on using Firefox or Chrome when launching RemoteApp from RDweb

Hi

I have deployed RDS integrally on Windows Server 2012. This is my deploymnet:

RDweb01 - RD Web access and gateway - Let's say "rdweb.contoso.com"

RDCBroker01 - Connection Broker in HA mode using a certificate signed by a public trust CA. We have just one Broker. The HA mode is only to be able to use the certificate. Let's say "rdfarm.contoso.com"

RDSHost01 and RDSHost02 - RD Session host.

I have several RemoteApp publishd through RDWeb. It's just IE pointing to different web sites.

When the users are using IE evrything works fine. No warnings and SSO works. The users log on to rdweb.contoso.com and then they are able to launch any RemoteApp without being asked for credentials, i.e. SSO works fine.

The problem is when using Firefox or Chrome. Then the users are asked for credentials when launching any RemoteApp. It seems the request comes from the broker. Since I can see the address rdfarm.contoso.com in the credential window.

The question is if SSO is supposed to work on non-IE browsers and if so HOW?

Thanks in advanced.

Forcing RDP Gateway to use SSL

Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Gateway Services with latest patches as of November.

All client computers are guaranteed to be Windows 7 or higher.

We do not have ISA Server.  We use Sophos.

When looking in the event log to check a client logging on via our gateway, I found this:

The user "FM\someusername", on client computer "174.106.xx.xxx", connected to resource "somecomputer". Connection protocol used: "HTTP".

I would think the connection protocol would be HTTPS.

QUESTION: How can we force RDP Gateway to use HTTPS for all connections?

Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS with Active Directory on the same server

First of all, I know this topic has been discussed everywhere, but I feel like my case is slightly different from others.

First of all, in our company, we have one physical server running with Windows Server 2012 and Active Directory running on it (with about 20 users). We have some services that client computers need to access through Remote Connection, the regular Remote Desktop Client connection would be totally fine, but as I understand, without the RDS Role we cannot have more than 2 connections simultaneously (+ admin).

The problem is that 1) I know RDS on AD is not recommended and considered a big security risk and 2) I cannot get the service to run properly anyway.

Since I don't need most of the features that RDS comes with anyway, is there a way I can just install one or two roles that it requires, so we can have more connections (I have the RDS CAL license for it).

If it's possible, which roles of RDS are necessary for such type of a setup?

Best regards,

Rauno

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

RemoteApp flicker on W2k12R2 RDS platform

We have a simple w2k12r2 RDS Farm with three hosts and two rds gateway servers. One of the key applications flashes and flickers like crazy. I have used GPO to optimize the Remote Session Environment and I have also set the servers for Best Performance in Advanced Settings. All three hosts are completely up to date with Windows updates. Is there a hotfix or something else available to correct this behavior? I have a 10mb point to point connection to the RDS Hosts so bandwidth is not an issue.

Errors 1511, 1521 Roaming Profiles on Windows Server 2012 R2

Hello!

I have a brand new Windows Server 2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Session Host Role installed. Roaming profiles are not working for any user, always gives the user a temporary profile.

Event Viewer shows 1511, 1521 errors with useless information:

  • 1511: Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.
  • 1521: Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you log off. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.

I have set up GPO in order to redirect profiles to a network share:

  • Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming User Profile: \\SERVER\Share
  • Use mandatory profiles on the RD Session Host server: Enabled

There is no network problem, I can access to \\SERVER\Share from user session. I tried GPO with \\IP\Share too

There is no security rights problems because \\SERVER\Share has NTFS full control permissions for everyone group (Is a pre production server)

There is no GPO errors in gpresult.

Any suggestions would be welcome,

Thanks in advance

RDS - Black Screen after login

$

Hello,

I have researched this issue for hours now and didn't find a resolution.

So I have a physical Dell server which runs Windows Server 2012 R2. Its a single server setup which means all RDS related roles are running on one physical server. Users access published apps on that server and also establish RDP sessions from there. About every 3 weeks all users see the black screen issue when they are trying to open apps from the server and I also see the black screen after login when I directly RDP into the server.

The server is fully patched and has all the recommended hotfixes installed related to this issue. Idle active user sessions are being disconnected after 2h and disconnected sessions are being disconnected after 15min. So the max users I have on this server at a time are between 10 and 15. The server has plenty of resources CPU, Memory and disk space.

When the issue occurs even ctrl+alt+end does not even work. I will have to reboot the server via shutdown -i from another machine.

I believe the server actually still runs and all services are up because SCOM does not trigger an alert.

I am really clueless why this issue keeps coming back after running for a couple of weeks. We have several other Windows Server 2012 R2 machines and I don't see that issue on them. I have to admit they do not run RDS.

I am tempted to setup a weekly reboot of the server but honestly that would be my last gateway of resort.

Can someone please help me and give me some additional ideas what the issue could be.

Thank you

Event ID 20: Attempt to send disconnect message to Windows video subsystem failed.

Hi there,

We keeps on getting this error message logged on the RDP server.  This appears to be only started after users logged off and disappeared when users logged back onto the RDP session (e.g. started from around 6pm and stopped from around 7:30am).  Some users are using Thin Client and some are using Windows 7.  Could this due to video driver compatibility with Thin client or caused by users disconnected from their session instead of logging off?  Is there any workarounds or hotfix for this issue?

RD Web connectins bypassing RD Gateway Settings.

Hi,

I've enabled the "Connect to other PC" tab in the web access and have also configured the RD Gateway settings under the Configure deployment options, however clients are able to connect to PCs that are not in the RD Gateway RAP.  My Goal is to only allow connections via RD Web(Connect to Remote PC) to those PCs listed in the RAP.

I'm thinking that I may be contradicting my self because I've allowed Domain Users when configureding the RD web Collections. Hopefully someone can help me figure this out.

Thank you very much.

Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

$

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?

Adding an App to all desktops via remoteapp

Afternoon.

I am currently testing out remoteapp in our dev environment.  I have previously used server 2008 and when i want to select a remote app to 'push'/show on the RDWEB i would have to make sure it is saved on the host server and it would work.  Now on Server 2012 r2 i have set up 2 servers with NLB, and one server asking as my broker and RDWEB.   I have set up 4 remote desktops (2 each server) and would like to push an app to it.  Office 2016 for example.

I have gone into my Collections and gone to publish an app.  In there i have got to this screen:

http://imgur.com/BR7vQ4e

I can't seem to find any explanation to this.  Which do i pick?  I would like Word to be available on the RDweb.  Why do i have to pick a host server?  Reading the explanation, do i need to install on just one of the desktops for it to replicate around?

What if i have 100 PCs on here and i want to update an app or push a new app out?  Am i missing something here?

Any advice here would be great.  Thanks.

Problem using Windows Server 2016 as an Application Server with a direct Remote Desktop Session

$

I work at a community college where we are converting and testing the labs for our Windows server classes to Windows Server 2016. We are experiencing a problem with one of our labs that we are testing using Windows Server 2016. We want to use the server as an application server using the Remote Desktop Session Host feature, i.e. a direct RDP session to the application server -- no browser. When setting up an application on a user's property sheet (see graphic below) where the user connects to the Remote Desktop Session Host Server; the application set in the Environment tab does not open. The user goes to the desktop, which is not how the lab is supposed to work.

The way that this lab should work is that the user logs on and the application opens to a full screen. When the user is done and exits the application, the user is immediately disconnected from the Remote Desktop Session. The user should never be able to access the Application Server's desktop. This is how this lab has worked with Windows Server 2008 through Windows Server 2012 R2.

If we use the Remote Desktop Web Access the lab works as intended and the same as it has with pre-Server 2016 operating systems. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a fix for this other than to use the Remote Desktop Web Access?

Outlook Indexing and RDS

$

Hi folks,

-We're running Outlook 2013 on our RDS pool machines (4x 2012 R2 servers).
-our Outlook mailboxes use Office365 accounts.
-Outlook is setup to cache 1 month (default is no caching but we've enabled it as it is the only way to get the yousendit plugin to work).
-Outlook Indexing however is disabled as adviced by our external consultants / MS Gold partner, using group policy : Computer configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Search\Prevent indexing Microsoft Office Outlook

The literal words of the consultants were : "you better disable indexing cause you might experience performance issues otherwise. Because Outlook will rebuild the index from scratch each time a user logs on on an RDS machine (with his/her roaming vxhd profile)".

Disabling Outlook indexing however results in advanced search features in Outlook being greyed out (I mean buttons "From", "subject", "more", etc. all greyed out).

My question is therefor multilayered :
-Is the consultant right about performance issues if we enable indexing ? Does it really have to rebuild from scratch with each logon ?
-If the best practice is indeed to disable indexing on an RDS machine : is there a workaround to get the advanced search features back ?

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.
Kind regards, Vincent
