RDP "RPC Server Unavailable" All Windows 2003 servers, 2012 R2 DC's

I have a mixed environment, 2012 R2 Domain Controllers only. Within the last 60 days all windows 2003 servers RDP connections no longer completed.

The event id the 2003 servers give is 1219 "Logon rejected for <user name>. Unable to obtain Terminal Server User Configuration. Error: <error description>". Network accounts work if they logon locally, if RDP from Win7, 2003, 2008, and 2012 OS is initiated it gives " error.

DNS, NetBIOS, all required services are configured correctly and started automatically (AD, DNS, WINS all on 2012 R2 servers). Also the regkey stated below fixes the issue...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server.
DWord: IgnoreRegUserConfigErrors.=1

This issue happened out of the blue, what caused/ causing it?

Could November or December 2016 rollups be causing this? Particularly the patch listed below, This is the only changes done that I am aware of.

User Profile Service failure at logon

I have a number of users who access a single application on my server (2008 R2) using an RDP client through a VPN tunnel or over the local network.  All have been working well until recently when some users have been getting the message "The User Profile Service failed the login.  User profile cannot be loaded."  I have read the various postings relating to this but none appear to answer this problem.  All my users are defined in Active directory on the same server.  Some have roaming profiles and these can login with no problems.  Non roaming users who already have a local profile on the server can login.  But, non roaming users whose profile has gone from the server (and I don't know how they have been deleted) get the above message.  If I set up a completely new user they get the same message, but not if I make them roaming.  All appropriate group membership is OK.

Server 2016 - Remote Desktop and Drive Passthrough + BSOD + Bugcheck

Afternoon all,

I have a few RDS Session Host servers on Windows Server 2016 with drive pass through enabled so users can use USB sticks from their local PC's to the RD session.

Since standing up these new Server 2016 RDS Session Hosts I have noticed that every few days they will Blue Screen with a bug check error in the Event Viewer:-

event log: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000027 (0x00000000fcb0027c, 0xffffdd0294bfb618, 0xffffdd0294bfb250, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 0372a8fb-86dd-4937-9a8c-aa155c72329c.

I have managed to isolate the issue to drive pass through when calling on \\TSCLIENT because when I turn off this option for users the server is stable for over a week now.

I have found 1 other person on the internet with this issue but his was with a normal Server 2016 install and was simply remote desktop'ing into the server so i believe the issue to be isolated to remote desktop in Server 2016 in general however when he reported it to the Visual Studio team as a bug the shrugged it off as a Windows issue.

https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/3146/debugging-managed-code-system-services-cause-rando.html#reply-form

I have documented my findings here:- http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2016/177575-server-2016-bsod-bugcheck.html

Has anyone else experienced this? I cannot find any flag from Microsoft to say this is an issue or that they are aware of this.

Remote Desktop for multiple users in Windows Server 2012 R2

Looks like there have been quite a few changes since Windows 2008 for this feature. Now I'm confused! Hopefully someone can help.

I have a management server and want to allow more than two simultaneous RDP connections to my server. It won't be publishing applications or have Citrix loaded on top of it.

I think its safe to assume I'll still need a license server with RDP CALs for Windows Server 2012 R2.

Do I need to choose the 'Remote Desktop Services' installation option in 'Add Roles and Features'?

Do I need a Connection Broker now?

Thanks,

Michael

Remote Desktop Gateway and Remote Desktop Server

I have discovered a single domain joined server running Windows Server 2008 R2 that has both of the following roles installed:

Remote Desktop Gateway

Remote Desktop Server (what we now called Session Host - formerly Terminal Server)

It was my understanding that installing both of those roles on a single server was not a best practice.  Can this be confirmed?

Redirected printers not showing in Devices and Printer - unable to change defaults

We have a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Server and are having problems with redirected printers on it. The problem occurs for users running the RDP client from Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Users are connecting over a WAN connection and are needing to print to their local network printers. The printers are connected successfully to their local workstations, and the option to redirect printers is selected in the RDP client. When users remote connect to the server the local printers show as available from within an application, such as Word, and they can print successfully using them, however they don't show in the Devices and Printers in the remote desktop session.

The problem is they want to change the default settings on the printer to be single-sided B&W and the default is Auto-color, double-sided. This can be changed manually from within the application but it doesn't stick once they log off and back on again.

Following the recommendation from this link:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/243942  I was able to change the defaults by going to the redirected printer in Devices and Printers and making the change under both Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults on the printers, then waiting for at least a minute before logging off and the settings are persistent for that user through a logoff and back on again.

We had major printing issues with this server and printers when using the Windows Easy Print driver as they constantly randomly never printed jobs, and Microsoft Support concluded we needed to disable using Windows Easy Print drivers first and load matching drivers on both the local workstation and the server. This resolved the problems they had re the non-printing, but it meant changes to the default settings had to be made on the redirected printer as above, as changing them on the local printer doesn't carry through the redirection.

I was able to configure the redirected printers at the time as they showed up in the Devices and Printers, but for some reason they don't any more. The changed defaults have stayed persistent for users that the change was made on, but they now want it made for new users. Also checking for existing users they no longer have the redirected printers showing up in Devices and Printers either.

There have been no changes to the server that I am aware of that would cause the printers to no longer show up. Directly attached printers show up OK, just not the redirected printer. Checking the device manager does show the print queue for the redirected printer, and as mentioned earlier, it's available to print to.

I thought perhaps copying the registry configuration of a working configured printer and loading that each time a user logs on to the Remote Desktop Server might be an option, but the redirected printers change the redirection number each time so they wouldn't match.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to either get the redirected printers showing up again, or configure them for persistent defaults would be greatly appreciated.

Remote Desktop Gateway Server not sending traffic to Remote Access Web server. help please

Hello I created a 4 server RDS 2012 R2 environment. here is the config:

RD Connection Broker Server/License Server - internal network

RD Web Access Server - Internal network

RD Session Host Server - internal network

RD Gateway server - perimeter network

Internally users can connect to the RDWeb access page and then connect to services published to the RD Web access page. this is working fine. The problem I am having is external users. I have a an external FQDN in my external DNS and I have that address set in my Gateway setting, however when a user connects to https://<external fqdn>/rdweb they are getting a 404 file or directory not found. it is my belief that it is trying to access the IIS server on the Gateway server where there is no RDWeb instead of sending the traffic to my internal RD Web Access server that does have the RDWeb service. I have gone through my deployment articles and I just don't know what is wrong. can anyone assist?

RD Configuration in server 2016

i'm receiving: Configure a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server. If you have an existing license server, specify that license server for the RD Session Host server. Otherwise, install RD Licensing on a computer on your network and Configure RD Session Host server to use it.

on our 2016 server Multipoint and have not found the answer to it.  when i try to follow the steps from server 2008 r2 i don't receive the same screens.  i have installed Licenses, when i check the RD config i receive two green checks, but still receive the above.

Software opening when sound file is played

$

I don't think this will have occurred for many people but stems back to when I was using Windows 7. I used to have the accessibility keyboard opening on start-up which was configured to happen via 'msconfig'.

Since upgrading to Windows 8 and Windows 10, it seems that during one of these upgrades the opening of this exe on startup has been somehow inadvertently attached to the playing of a sound in Windows and is somehow embedded in the registry to do this.

I'm only posting this now as since the advent of Windows 10, these registry settings seem to have been attached to my Microsoft account and now all of my devices are now doing this.

So the on-screen keyboard filename is 'osk.exe'. I did a quick search for this in the registry and only one key appears to contain this:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore\e134fd88_0

The key value is:

{2}.\\?\hdaudio#func_01&ven_1013&dev_4206&subsys_106b0100&rev_1003#{6994ad04-93ef-11d0-a3cc-00a0c9223196}\espeakertopo/00010001|\Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\osk.exe%b{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

Clearly this key is something to do with the audio settings of my machine, although its in the Internet Explorer section of the registry, it clearly is the offender. My question is, what can I change this to? What should the value of this temporary key be, to prevent this occuring?

Server 2012 refusing RDP admin connection (no licensing)

Hello, I am trying to remote into Windows Server 2012, which I did for months, but am now getting this error:

"The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license"

How can I fix this and why do I need a license server? I just want to log in to do administration, which doesn't require a CAL per below.

Do I have to acquire RDS CALs if I am only remotely administering Windows Server operating systems by using
Remote Desktop for Administration?

No. Up to two users may connect to the Windows Server operating system simultaneously to perform administrative
functions without needing any RDS CALs. Additional administrative users need the appropriate RDS CALs.

I am stuck right now. Any pointers please?

Thanks for any help.

Problem with page size when using redirected printer

$

I have a customer who connects to another customer's network via VPN, then logs into and RDS server running Server 2012.

This customer then opens an Excel file and tries to print it out to a printer that is local to her and of course shows as redirected when looking at Devices and Printers in her login on the RDS server.

The problem is that when going to File / Print on the Excel document, the page size is listed as Custom Size and if you try to select any other size from the list, it won't accept it and stays at custom size. If she selects another redirected local printer, she can choose whatever page size she wants.

This is not selecting the paper size. She can change that on either redirected printer. So when she is trying to print an Excel file on legal size paper, the print comes out reduced as if it is trying to print on letter size paper even though legal size paper is selected.

I hope my description is clear enough. If not, please let me know and I'll try to explain further. So I'm trying to find how to fix this one redirected printer (a Brother MFC-7860DW) so that she can change the page size so when the document prints it occupies the full sheet of legal size paper.

Only newly created users get a temporary profile, no UPD created

Hello! Since a few days newly created users get a temporary profile when logging in to our RDS 2012 R2 farm.

We have a farm with 9 RD session host, users have User Profile Disks and everything has worked fine for over a year. Now only newly created users get the temp profile pop up when logging on to the farm, and no UPD is created. When I check the registry ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList ) a *.bak item is created. When we delete it it's recreated whem te users logs on again.

Existing users who we have created a few weeks earlier have no problems at all.

I'm a little stuck here, any help is really appreciated!

Caching of desktop credentials with Custom Credential Provider - eliminate the dual login problem

$

We have written our own credential provider and installed it on a Win12r2 server.

Our CP performs an adaptive multi-factor authentication and logs the user in once the multi-factor authentication has been passed. If needed, the user is sent a one-time passcode that they must enter to complete the login. If the multi-factor is passed, there is no need for any additional passcode and the user is automatically logged in with just their ID and Password.

However, when accessing the server via terminal services (MSTSC), even when there is no need for a one-time-passcode, the user is forced to log in a second time, when they have already logged in correctly via the terminal (MSTSC).

I have tried to setup all the "Allow" options for credential delegation using [TERMSRV/* & TERMSRV/*.ourdomain.com] via the Local GPE and also the Win12r2 Domain Controller Default GPO (Local Computer Policy-Computer Configuration-Administrative Templates-System-Credentials Delegation) but this did not allow the caching of the users credentials.

What is the right way to remove the dual login with a Custom Credential Provider?

Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

Can 2012R2 connect to a 2008R2 license server?

$

I've got a RD license server running on server 2008R2. Clients connect to it just fine and I have no problems with it. I recently created two new 2012R2 servers that are running XenApp. Those new servers started giving me a popup that "There are no Connection Broker servers in the server pool." That makes me wonder if 2012R2 cannot connect to a 2008R2 license server. If it can, could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks for the help.

NUM Lock state not synced between local and RDP

Hi,

a Customer is running a Windows Server 2012 R2 virtualized with Hyper-V as a Terminalserver (fully patched with latest Windows Updates). He's using 1 Win7 and 4 Win8.1 Clients to access said server via RDP (Clients are patched aswell).

The Problem is: Numlock is enabled locally, but as soon as they are on the Loginscreen of the Server, Numlock isnt working and the Numlock Key has to be pressed once to enable it.

The Win7 Client doesnt seem to be affected, and other other Clients are not affected every day, but roughly every 2nd Day it stops working.

I ensured that the Regkey HKCU\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyBoardIndicators is set to "2" on every Client and on the Server (for each user). I also set that Regkey on HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard

Any Ideas whats causing this Issue and how to resolve it?

Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server Event ID 20499

I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2

I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.

I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499

Smart card service issue on Windows Server 2012r2 - terminal services (running on HyperV)

$

Hello...

I have virtualized terminal server on HyperV. All my remote clients use USB SC reader for certificate use.

Now pay attention... the Server 2012 has new feature regarding Smart Card use:

"Smart card reader detection logic has been added so that the Smart Card Service runs only when appropriate. On Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, the Smart Card Service (scardsvr) automatically starts when the user connects a smart card reader and automatically stops when a user removes a smart card reader and no other smart card reader is connected to the computer. On startup, the Smart Card Service automatically starts if a reader was previously connected to the computer but a reader is not currently connected to the system. If no smart card readers are connected to the computer, the service will automatically shut down one minute after the last API call into the Smart Card Service. If a reader was never previously connected to the computer, the service will not start automatically."

And here is the main part... HyperV running OS doesn't support USB SC reader detection on remote client. When I insert the card nothing happens. The SmartCard service doesn't start (Automatic setting). RDP SmartCart share is enable on client.

If I start service manualy then the SmartCard is accessible. But only for the time of my login. if I logout then the service is stopped.
I also test it with logon to non HyperV server... the service starts with no problem.

For now I solved the issue with task net start SCardSvr on 1 minute.

Please can anybody help me with this...

Copy all of "My Desktops" to another Mac with Microsoft Remote Desktop v8.0.9

$

I have almost 1,000 entry under  "My Desktops" in Microsoft Remote Desktop v8.0.9 and I'm looking for a quick way to transfer all of them to another Mac.

I thought I could just copy the .plist file at:

~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.rdc.mac/Data/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.rdc.mac.plist

to my new computer and I'd be good to go but that's not working.

I also found the

~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.rdc.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Remote Desktop

folder and copied that as well (tho the folders here look to be empty, I see the folder names match entries in the .plist). Yet, "My Desktops" is empty.

I also noticed when I copy the .plist over to the new laptop it's 946 KB in size. I run the RDP client on the new computer and the .plist file size drops down to 10 KB in size.

I really do not want to export all 1,000 entries and copy those files over to the new computer. I've found that the exported files when run require you to enter the username/password verse automatically getting it from (I assume) the keychain.

Is there anyway to copy all my RDP hosts from 1 Mac to another Mac?

Thanks.

I have verified that all services are running including the RD Session Host  and I am using an Administrator account for the set up. All the terminal services are installed on a single server, Domain Controller is installed on a separate one.

When I try to add RemoteApp Application to the collection i get the error bellow::

Can any one help solve this problem, I tried to trouble shoot  this with out success.
