Enabling Desktop Experience on 2012 R2 Terminal Server

I've got a 2012 R2 RDS server that I'd like to enable the Desktop Experience for my users to be able to view pictures in Photo Viewer instead of Paint.

Are there any downsides to doing this? Anything that would break an existing RDS installation and/or user profiles?

Server 2012 RDWeb internal / external domain name mismatch

$

I have a 2012 R2 RDS single server set up and am having difficulty accessing the RDS session from RDWeb. The RDS server contains all roles:
Connection Broker, Session Host, Gateway, and Web Access.

The server is named RDS.domain.local
The local domain is domain.local

Internally, I can access https://localhost/RDWeb/ and I am presented with the collection containing an RDS session. This works fine.
I have an A record externally pointing to Remote.domainname.com
I can access RDWeb from this url: https://remote.domainname.com/RDWeb

I can log in and authenticate, and am presented with the RDP icon for the RDS session. But, when I click it, it opens RDP but I get an error:
"Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable. Try reconnecting later or contact your network administrator for assistance."

I CAN use the RDP client and enter the gateway settings of remote.domainname.com and use the computername of rds.domainname.local externally and this DOES work.

I think the issue is with a domain mismatch, or since remote is not the name of the RDS server. I believe this because I had set this up in another environment where the domain and servername matched the gateway and RDweb server. What I mean is this:

Working environment:
internal domain name: domainname.com
external domain name: domainname.com
RDS / Gateway server: remote.domainname.com
RDWeb URL:  https://remote.domainname.com/RDWeb

Non-working environment:
internal domain name: domainname.local
external domain name: domainname.com
RDS / Gateway server: rds.domainname.local
RDWeb URL:  https://remote.domainname.com/RDWeb

Please note above the difference in .local and .com, also the name of the server. I believe I need to change something in IIS to redirect remote.domainname.com to rds.domainname.local but I need some guidance as to if I am on the right path, and how to correct this. Thanks in advance!

Remote Desktop Licensing

Just installed an RDP Server with a separate Licensing server and Gateway (on the DC). The RD Licensing manager shows

green tick and the following:

Windows Server 2012 Installed RDS per user CAL      Retail Purchase      10 - Total Licenses   0 - Available

The Separate RDP Server with Broker, Host, Web Access installed shows no Licenses available in the  Licensing Diagnoser.

It seems to see the License Server ok.

These licenses may have been previously downgraded via the clearing house to work with 2008 server. Is this a possible issue.

Server 2016 - Remote Desktop and Drive Passthrough + BSOD + Bugcheck

Afternoon all,

I have a few RDS Session Host servers on Windows Server 2016 with drive pass through enabled so users can use USB sticks from their local PC's to the RD session.

Since standing up these new Server 2016 RDS Session Hosts I have noticed that every few days they will Blue Screen with a bug check error in the Event Viewer:-

event log: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000027 (0x00000000fcb0027c, 0xffffdd0294bfb618, 0xffffdd0294bfb250, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 0372a8fb-86dd-4937-9a8c-aa155c72329c.

I have managed to isolate the issue to drive pass through when calling on \\TSCLIENT because when I turn off this option for users the server is stable for over a week now.

I have found 1 other person on the internet with this issue but his was with a normal Server 2016 install and was simply remote desktop'ing into the server so i believe the issue to be isolated to remote desktop in Server 2016 in general however when he reported it to the Visual Studio team as a bug the shrugged it off as a Windows issue.

https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/3146/debugging-managed-code-system-services-cause-rando.html#reply-form

I have documented my findings here:- http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2016/177575-server-2016-bsod-bugcheck.html

Has anyone else experienced this? I cannot find any flag from Microsoft to say this is an issue or that they are aware of this.

Work Resources Folder Not populating

We had an issue yesterday where the user profile disks got disconnected while users were in the system.

Afterwards some users "Work Resources" folder in the start menu are empty. Updating via Control Panel does not repopulate. The wizard just sits and stays on the screen that says "Adding Resources".

I found an article that suggested deleting everything in the Feed key in the registry and emptying the Work Spaces folder then trying again, but this did not work for me.

Looking at event viewer I see the following error:

"The following resource could not be downloaded: https://myrdwebserver/RDWeb/Feed/rdp/cpub-DLX-PROGRAM-CmsRdsh.rdp

Event ID 1017

Error code 0x80070003

Next step will be to create a test user account and log onto the PC with that account and attempt to populate the folder to see if it is profile related.

Windows 2012 R2, the issue suddenly happens, RDP no longer working. I checked all the following below and they are all good.

1. Registry key - RDP is enabled

2. GPO (local and domain) - not settings for RDP

3. RDP services are running

4. RDP session is enable in Windows

5. Port 3389 is open and listening

The following RDP tests and failed!

1. RDP by FQDN

2. RDP by its IP

3. Loopback RDP with 127.0.0.1

All three tests above gave the error message shown

What else I can check to fix this? thanks.

Cannot connect to terminal servers

Hi,

When Trying to access terminal servers getting an error " The remote session was disconnected because the Remote Desktop client access license stored on this computer has been modified".

For fixing this, I have tried deleting "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSLicensing" and logged in again to check if the registry recreated and did not find that.

Does anyone know the fix for this ?

Any help is much appreciated.

Caching of desktop credentials with Custom Credential Provider - eliminate the dual login problem

$

We have written our own credential provider and installed it on a Win12r2 server.

Our CP performs an adaptive multi-factor authentication and logs the user in once the multi-factor authentication has been passed. If needed, the user is sent a one-time passcode that they must enter to complete the login. If the multi-factor is passed, there is no need for any additional passcode and the user is automatically logged in with just their ID and Password.

However, when accessing the server via terminal services (MSTSC), even when there is no need for a one-time-passcode, the user is forced to log in a second time, when they have already logged in correctly via the terminal (MSTSC).

I have tried to setup all the "Allow" options for credential delegation using [TERMSRV/* & TERMSRV/*.ourdomain.com] via the Local GPE and also the Win12r2 Domain Controller Default GPO (Local Computer Policy-Computer Configuration-Administrative Templates-System-Credentials Delegation) but this did not allow the caching of the users credentials.

What is the right way to remove the dual login with a Custom Credential Provider?

How many concurrent remote sessions can Windows Server handle?

$

We want to run a Windows Server at our workplace that allows users to log in and make use of the programs installed on that server. We need to be able to do about 15 concurrent connections that allow users to work without bothering each other. Is this possible with Windows Server? Currently we have a Linux server that our users can SSH into, but we need the Windows server for certain programs.

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

$

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?

RDS 2012 2 Factor Authentication

Hi all,

I'm trying to deploy an RDS 2012 solution with 2FA (at the Web/Gateway layer) but I'm struggling to find out what the recommended/supported way of doing this is given:

  • TMG is end of life
  • UAG doesn't support publishing RemoteApps from 2012

I'd really appreciate any advice/assistance in doing this....

Many thanks

Mike

Local Microphone not redirected

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with remote desktop in combination with microphone redirection.

When connection to the remote server remote audio is being sent from the server to the host but the microphone is not recognized. (audio service is started)
I've checked the settings on the host and connected to a different server on a different domain (same settings, different client) without any issues or without any changes to their configuration.

I'm pretty sure the problem is somewhere on the domain.
I've changed GPO settings and checked registry's and everything looks normal.

As a troubleshooting step i've also disabled all the GPO's without succes.

This site is running Hyper-v and all servers are up to date Server 2012R2's

What would be a good troubleshootings step as al the searching results i've come up with come back to the following steps which i already did:

  • enable microphone redirection on the host
  • start audio service on server
  • change GPO settings to allow recording of microphone (device and resource redirection)
  • change registry settings on the server to enable microphone recording (fDisableAudioCapture)

In Windows 2012 R2 RDS how to specify same configuration option as on Remote Desktop Web Access Configuration page in 2008 R2 RDS

$

Hi,

I recently upgraded my TSG server from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. Everything seems to be working well except for one issue. In the 2008 R2 RDWeb page, I could go to a 3rd tab named "Configuration". This tab was the Remote Desktop Web Access Configuration page and said this:

You must configure RD Web Access to provide users access to RemoteApp and Desktop Connection. Use these settings to specify the source that provides the RemoteApp programs and desktops that are displayed to users through RemoteApp and Desktop Connection. Users can access RemoteApp and Desktop Connection through the Start menu on a computer that is running Windows 7 or through the RD Web Access Web site.

On this tab I would select the "One or more RemoteApp sources" option and then enter "localhost" for the source name.

This allowed me to use the Remote Desktop tab on the RDWeb page to connect to any internal terminal server.

So how in my new Windows 2012 R2 TSG server do I specify this option?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

RDS more active sessions than licenses

$

hi all,
*********************************
Windows Server 2008 R2
Workgroup configuration
Remote Desktop Services
License program: Volume license
Total licenses: 6
*********************************

What is strange is that I can see 9x active sessions on the server, so do not know how this is possible.

I cannot run a report as it is Workgroup environment. Grace period has ended.

When you logon to RD License Manager I can see the "Issued" column as "-". I would be expecting the RDS server issuing the available 6 licenses.

License Diagnosis shows: "did not identify any licensing problems for the Remote Desktop Session Host Server."

Nothing on event viewer to suggest misconfiguration or anything.

I am really confused as to how 9x active connections can be established on a 6x license node.

Assistance is much appreciated.

Limit of only 5 RDS at once

Hello!

I recently installed Remote Desktop Services on DC. I have server1 which is a RD connection broker, session host, also web access is configured. DC is RD licencing server. Both servers are running on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.

It looks like everything is configured properly - server1 is getting licence from DC, there is no error or any warring on server1. However, I can only connect 5 users at once to the server1. Using RDC user number 6 would be stuck on the window

Connecting to: server1. Configuring remote session...

However this remote desktop session is never established and all I can do is cancel the window. Total licences is 50 and currently there is 17 available. I even tried to create test session collection and that results in having same issue.

Does anyone have same/similar issue?

Many Thanks,
