RD VDI 2016

Good evening,

We are looking into VDI solution for our environment. We have users that need to use VM for themselves, they are running heavy applications and session host is not the option in this case. Can anyone help me with requirements or what I need to think about before implementing this? I can find a step by step guide but those guids not explaning the real scenarios. We have ca 20 users that will use VDI.

Thank you in advanced.

Redirected printers not showing in Devices and Printer - unable to change defaults

We have a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Server and are having problems with redirected printers on it. The problem occurs for users running the RDP client from Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Users are connecting over a WAN connection and are needing to print to their local network printers. The printers are connected successfully to their local workstations, and the option to redirect printers is selected in the RDP client. When users remote connect to the server the local printers show as available from within an application, such as Word, and they can print successfully using them, however they don't show in the Devices and Printers in the remote desktop session.

The problem is they want to change the default settings on the printer to be single-sided B&W and the default is Auto-color, double-sided. This can be changed manually from within the application but it doesn't stick once they log off and back on again.

Following the recommendation from this link:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/243942  I was able to change the defaults by going to the redirected printer in Devices and Printers and making the change under both Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults on the printers, then waiting for at least a minute before logging off and the settings are persistent for that user through a logoff and back on again.

We had major printing issues with this server and printers when using the Windows Easy Print driver as they constantly randomly never printed jobs, and Microsoft Support concluded we needed to disable using Windows Easy Print drivers first and load matching drivers on both the local workstation and the server. This resolved the problems they had re the non-printing, but it meant changes to the default settings had to be made on the redirected printer as above, as changing them on the local printer doesn't carry through the redirection.

I was able to configure the redirected printers at the time as they showed up in the Devices and Printers, but for some reason they don't any more. The changed defaults have stayed persistent for users that the change was made on, but they now want it made for new users. Also checking for existing users they no longer have the redirected printers showing up in Devices and Printers either.

There have been no changes to the server that I am aware of that would cause the printers to no longer show up. Directly attached printers show up OK, just not the redirected printer. Checking the device manager does show the print queue for the redirected printer, and as mentioned earlier, it's available to print to.

I thought perhaps copying the registry configuration of a working configured printer and loading that each time a user logs on to the Remote Desktop Server might be an option, but the redirected printers change the redirection number each time so they wouldn't match.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to either get the redirected printers showing up again, or configure them for persistent defaults would be greatly appreciated.

Preventing Roaming Profiles from loading on RDS Server

Hello All,

We have an RD Gateway server and we have some users in AD that need a roaming profile on normal workstations but not for RD Gateway. Is there a setting to prevent roaming profiles from loading on the RD Gateway server?

Thank you in advance,

Brian

Cannot Reconnect to RDS Session on Server 2012 - Remote Desktop Services are currently busy

I am experiencing an issue with Server 2012 RDS. This is a VM running on a 2008 R2 Hyper V Cluster.

The issue seems to only affect one user, but he is the MD.

While trying to re/connect to a remote app, the screen will instead display -

Remote Desktop Services are currently busy

Although sometimes you simply just get a welcome screen that sits there doing nothing instead. It is not an easily reproduced issue, so I don't know how or why it seems to happen, just that rdpshell.exe sometimes spikes in usage and the session can/will not sign off (by either Administrator or the end user)

He will then be unable to log in until I reboot the server, which will not actually restart unless I do a reset.

I would very much like a fix for this, as getting everyone else to disconnect so I can reboot is not really a fix, and I'm sure the MD is not happy about it either.

User Profile Service - Event ID 1534

Hi Guys,
I have a 2008 Terminal Server which is logging an Event ID 1534 when a user logs in with the following description...
Profile notification of event Load for component {56EA1054-1959-467f-BE3B-A2A787C4B6EA} failed, error code is -2147024894.
I've done a search for the GUID and found it belongs to "SHACCT Profile Notification Handler".
There is no problems with the profile and everything runs nicely - but I would rather find what is causing this warning, any ideas guys?

Many thanks - Nathan

The remote PC doesn't support Remote Administration Mode While enabled?

I have a 4 Windows Server 2008 R2 servers. 2 running as DCs and 2 running as normal servers.

I have 6 Windows 7 Professional systems on the same network. Recently we enabled Restricted Admin mode enabled through this information.

The problem is on 3 of the 4 servers I can remote into the machine without a problem. The 1 I can't remote to I get this error:

The remote PC doesn't support Remote Administration mode.

I have checked and the registry key is set correctly. I have enabled and disabled it. I have installed all the updates. I can't figure out why it won't let me remote to it. Can anyone help me?

As far as I can tell Remote Administration Mode is enabled and I should be able to remote to it. Thanks.

Can I connect directly to a desktop in a pooled vdi collection running on server 2012 using an rdp client?

I've set up a test server with a pooled vdi collection of Windows 7 desktops.  I am able to use web access to connect to one of the desktops using my test account.  However, if I try to use my local rdp client to connect to testhost.domain.com, it rejects the connection as my test user isn't a member of the remote desktop users group on the server.  "Testhost" is the connection broker, so I had expected that by trying to RDP to that server, I would be redirected to a virtual desktop, similar to how a connection broker in a 2008R2 RDSH farm will redirect incoming connections to a farm member.

My end goal is to connect to these vdi sessions from a thin client, using the built in rdp client.  Is this possible?  Am I doing something wrong?

Also, what is the minimum version of RDP that could be used to connect to a 2012 connection broker / VDI pool?

How To Setup Local Tunnel Through Windows Remote Desktop

My local machine is using MacOSX/linux and am able to connect to a Windows Remote Desktop machine (using Windows Remote Desktop/Remote Desktop Connection).

The Windows Remote Desktop machine is able to connect to certain servers that I cannot connect to locally on my MAC. For example, connection to database servers, specific web servers, etc.

How can I setup some kind of tunnel so that I can access the servers locally on my mac?

Cannot install CALs on Windows Server 2016 (CALs that were included with the purchase)

Good day, I had purchased a Windows Server 2016 Standard license in October, and the one I purchased is with the following title:

Windows Server 2016 Standard 10-Client Access License (English)

I have activated the server successfully, but when I try adding the CALs in RD licensing manager, I get an error that the license code is not recognized. I figure that it's looking for a CAL purchase license code. But according to the title I thought I had purchased Windows Server including 10 CALs. Am I wrong? Or how do I go about licensing the CALs?

Thank you very much in advance for any help. I've spent hours online looking for a solution and even with MS support on the phone, but I am not getting any helpful information.

Kind regards, Timmy.

Is there to grant a standard user privilege to view the running processes of other users in Task Manager (Server 2012 R2 Terminal Servers)

Hi Everyone,

I'm one of the help desk guys in our company and we're trying to figure out how we can give a standard user to view the process of other users via task manager. We're using Windows Server 2012 R2 Terminal Hosts. Reason why we need this is because we've been getting very high CPU usage from some users in the terminal servers and it slows down everyone. We'd like to grant some members of the help desk team access to view the processes without giving them admin accounts to the server. With this, the team can analyze what process consumes the most CPU.

Thanks is advance.

Is RD Web Access role required for access using the standard RDP client?

$

I'm setting up several new Remote Desktop servers (session-based). Do I need to install the RD Web Access role if the users will only be connecting via the RDP client? It wants to install it as part of the default installation, but for security reasons I think it might be better not to have it, unless not doing so will cause loss of other functionality.

Thanks

Disconnect from RemoteApp without exiting app?

Hello,

I have a situation where users need a program to be constantly running (it does overnight data polling from a point-of-sale system) but they want to access it remotely. I'd like to use RemoteApp since it is simpler than Remote Desktop/Virtual Desktop, but I want to make sure they can easily close RemoteApp sessions without actually killing the app. Possible?

The app is GUI only, and yes, I understand it is stupid that the polling system does not run as a service. It is a very old, proprietary program. I couldn't find in any documentation on RemoteApp whether it could do this or not.

Thanks!

Hi,

is it possible to have a single, non-domain Server 2016 to publish applications, or is just a published desktop possible?

Configuring default taskbar icons

How can I preconfigure which icons are pinned to the taskbar by default for new users?

For example, after we installed Chrome, it now automatically shows up on the taskbar as new users log on. But we rely on the shortcut on the Public Desktop to ensure everyone has access and do not want it automatically cluttering the taskbar for every new user profile. We want to predefine what is there, or, if nothing else, ensure that nothing shows up there by default. We are not interested in blocking users from pinning things there themselves, only controlling what appears there upon first logon.

Nor am I interested in a post-user-profile creation cleanup script; I want to find and prevent this at the source.

We are also seeing the Server Manager, PowerShell, and Windows Explorer showing up on the taskbar. Sure, the user can right-click and delete them, but that is not the point; I want to prevent them. But a search of C:\Users\Default and the default user registry hive reveals nothing that I can see as being relevant.

I  am not worried that the users will do any damage if they use one of these shortcuts, since I am sure they would have little, if any, actual rights within the application; I just want to minimize the clutter and potential for stray clicks or boredom getting them into places they should not see. Out of sight, out of mind...

Licensing

Hello, I setup a VM on HyperV and run Remote Desktop services on it. I setup all the components including licensing. Everything looks fine except when I try to login to the server remotely as local admin I get a message that there is no licensing. I thought that there were two build in admin licenses and when I login remotely as admin the licensing I have setup for regular users would not be used. Any thoughts? What can I check or need to change for the admin licensing to work?

Thank you. Karel Grulich, MCSE, SBS

Restrict application to a single instance

Is there any way we can restrict an exe or an application to not start if another user is already running the application?

We have a tool which conects to a Database and if the tool is used by two users at the same time it creats duplicate entries in  database. So do we have any options to restrict the access to an exe or application only for one user?

Thanks and Regards Hemachandran
