Trying to Remote Control Server 2008 r2 using Windows 10 Pro

Hi....

I'm struggling to take control of my Windows Server 2008 r2 using Windows 10 Pro.

I can Remote Desktop Connect to the server, but it just seems to log me in as a new session - whereas I would like to take control of the mouse and keyboard of the existing users session (Administrator) and view what I am doing on the screen connected to the server.

I'm not really sure how else to ask this question - I hope one of you guys "gets" it...

Thanx

Mike

Ghost typing the letter G

We have a 2016 standard server to which a few employees connect to for Terminal Services. Only one client using Windows 10 has suddenly developed an odd problem. The letter "g" keeps being printing. It doesn't happen on the computer itself, just in TS. I removed all peripherals thinking maybe there was some signal being transmitted from there, but still happens. Any ideas?

RDS 2019 - backward compatibility?

Hi All

It's been a while, good to be back though.

Cutting to the chase, for expediency I want to add (possibly a pair) of 2019 GWs to our current production 2012R2 farm:

1.  Can 2019 GWs front up a 2012 farm (CB/Web/Hosts)?

2.  Or do I need to update the RDWB, RDCBs to 2019 also?

Would have been useful for the doc to be updated: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/upgrade-to-rds#flow-for-deployment-upgrades

3. Also want to implement 2FA or or some type of one time auth (SMS) without Azure etc.

https://duo.com/docs/rds ??

We have two RDS 2012R2 farms in separate buildings totaling somewhere around 45 servers, a 2012 PoC used for UAT and a nice shiny new 2019 PoC farm for testing (fixes a few bugs in 2012 R2 RDS), one which we call 'switching' where the wrong window is presented to the user upon an auto reconnect post network dropping.

I'm looking to find an expedient solution.  I know adding all the apps and several of our tricks to ensure 16-bit applications function (yes don't fall off your seats) take TIME.  I also know that calling 2012R2 RDP application files 'workspace' from 2019 RDHosts works well too, so am pondering leaving all apps on 2012R2 and fronting using 2019.

Something like this:

User > 2019 RDWB > 2019 RDCB > 2019 RDHost (x2 for HA in each container) > calls RDP files (you can find these in Control Panel) which directs user to 2012 RDHosts (which have all the apps on).  This would avoid reinstalling all apps and still retain HA.  I've tested this on a 2019 PoC, all good and quite funky!

But maybe there are other options?

Remote Desktop Licensing Diagnoser checks the wrong Licensing Server

$

We have started using Server 2016 as RDS session hosts and we had to create a new Server 2016 licensing server as the session hosts require a Server 2016 as well.

I have created the new licensing 2016 server, activated it, added it to the AD group of terminal server licensing , added licenses.

Then I added the new server as the RD license server of the RD deployment and chose 'per user" licensing mode. There is no other RD license server listed in the configuration or in the server list in server manager. I can confirm that with powershell command:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-RDLicenseConfigurationMode                 LicenseServer----                 -------------PerUser             {HostRDL2016.XYZ.com}

When I run RD Licensing Diagnoser, the server that is diagnosed is the old server (Server 2012), not the one I created.

How can I fix this?

Unable to access server via remote desktop after gateway change

Hi,

I manage my home theatre and music servers via remote desktop. Both have wired connections to the router.

All has been well for many years.

Recently our old modem/router was replaced with a new one. There have been no other changes.

While I can still remote into the home theatre server I am no longer able to remote into the music server:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer....

What I can do is:

  • ping the music server
  • bring up shares on the music server on another computer
  • access the music server using TeamViewer

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can use remote desktop to manage my music server again please?

RDP to "Console" Session

Is it possible to remote desktop in such a way that we can connect to the "console" session on a Windows Server 2012 R2 computer?

The reason we are asking is that we have an application that will not run unless it is the console session, but we are trying to access this application from a thin client.

1. With multiple session hosts, do I install all my applications on all my session host servers, so if one server is down all application are still available.

2. Is the connection broker still limited by 400 concurrent user connection?

Thanks

When there are two RDS servers which they obtain the RDS CAL from the license manager in another server the Domain Controller.

If the same client tries to access the two RDS servers at the same time will this be counted as a single  RDS CAL? Or will the client requires to have an additional CAL for access?

I appreciate any response,

Thanks in advance

RDS Server User Desktop Icon Display issues

Hello Guys

We are in the end phase of publishing our new 2016 RDS Server. Now its the last 5% (Fixing Appearence Issues).

And the main problem right now is this:

Either the text vanishes/cuts off or it changes its color/loses the shadow/frame.

When i refresh it gets back to normal (Google Chrome is the expected, ThinLinc and VNC Viewer is what i get).

When i hover over the icon it reverts back and this is just ugly.

Im not really sure what the issue could be so i searched for a bit but couldn't find anything regarding this issue. I also did a sfc /scannow to check if any of the files that are responsible for this might be corrupt or something but to no vail.

This is the 2nd server we setup that has the same issue.

I appreaciate every bit of help.

Kind regards

Pkey

RDS 2012 R2 / Black Screen

Hi,

I have set up a brand new 2012R2 RDS farm but I have a strange behavior that I am unable to fix :

"Idle session limit" and "End a disconnected session" are set by GPO  ( 1 hour, each)

But each time a user reach one of this limit, this cause an issue on the terminal server service :

 - svchost process ( attached to terminal service) becomes unresponsive

- no more users are able to login  ( login process goes fine, no error message; but users get a black screen... CTRL+ALT+DEL works and permits to launch some commands ( calc, notepad...)

- connected users can't close their session : they get stuck at " waiting for user profile service"

Any idea of what is happening ?

Thank you.

Windows Server 2019 does not get CAL´s from RDP licensing server

Hi,

As the title says, Windows Server 2019 does not get CAL´s from RDP licensing server.

It seems I only have this issue with 2019 and Server 2012, 2016 works fine.

I installed a new licensing server on Windows Server 2019 and activated it and added a User CAL pack for Windows Server 2019.

Connected the 2019 server I want multiple RDP connections via gpedit pointing to the licensing server and also selected the User CAL´s.

I also tested on our existing Server 2016 with 2016 user CAL´s and it doesn´t seem to license the connections, I can still only connect with 2 users.

Is this a known issue or am I missing something here?

Regards

Niklas

Can copy/paste text but not file via Remote Desktop Gateway; problem only on Windows 10

Remote Desktop Gateway running on Server 2008 R2. For starters, I already acknowledge that we are due for hardware upgrade to a later server OS, but that would mean the cost of many Terminal Server licenses just so we can continue to get through the Remote Desktop Gateway to workstations inside the LAN. So the answer, unless someone can point out to me specific known issues, should not be just "upgrade to a modern OS".

I log on to a Windows 10 workstation (on the LAN & on the domain) from my remote/home through my 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Gateway located at the office. I can copy & paste file content but not files. That is, I can highlight & copy text from inside a file on the office computer and paste that into a text editor on my computer, and vice versa. But I cannot copy & paste a file.

On the other hand, I can log onto a Windows 7 computer via RD Gateway on the same network, and there, I can copy and paste files through the remote connection. But yet again, I can log onto the Windows 10 computer directly while connected to the office VPN and copy/paste files just fine.

So the problem of being able to copy/paste text but not copy/paste files is specific to connections 1) to Windows 10 hosts but 2) only when connected through the Remote Desktop Gateway.

What is it in Windows 10 and/or the Remote Desktop Gateway 2008 that will allow me to copy text & files from Windows 7 Host but only text--not files--from Windows 10 host?

RDS Connection Shadowing

Hi,

I have a Server 2016 RDS deployment with two servers.  One server is the connection broker, gateway and a session host.  The other server is just a session host.  I have found that I am unable to shadow a connection on one of the session host servers.  The server that contains the broker, gateway and session host, is able to shadow connections just fine.  If I try to do the same (I am doing this from the server manager GUI) on the other session host, it does not work.  If I view the list of connections, every connection shows an ID of zero, instead of the actual session ID.  Viewing the list of connections on the other server does properly display the ID of each connection.  So if I right click a connection and choose to shadow it, it displays an error "The specified session is not connected."  I am sure this is related to the fact that the session ID is not being displayed properly.  Can someone offer some assistance in getting this resolved?

Hi

I am trying to install the kb3047296 on Server 2012 R2 RDS server, but it shows me The Update is not applicable to your computer error.

I checked the  prerequisite and can confirm the kb2919355 shows installed on the server.

Any idea how to resolve this?

Here is the Hotfix I need to install: KB3047296

A remote desktop service deployment does not exist in the server pool

Hi,

I m running the Windows Server 2016 std edition (latest windows update). I've installed following RDS services below:

1. Remote desktop connection broker(installed)

2. Remote desktop licensing (installed)

3. Remote desktop session host(installed)

Then I go to server manager--> remote desktop services, I can only see two options on the left panel. "Overview" and " Server". If I click overview, and following error message appear on the right panel:

"A remote desktop service deployment does not exist in the server pool. To create a deployment, run the Add roles and features wizard and select the remote services installation option"

I was confused about this message because as I installed three remote desktop services above successfully.

Later I realized that when I ran the add roles and features wizard to install remote desktop services, the two options didn't exist on the left panel of the wizard window.

-Deployment type

-Deployment Scenario

Questions why are these two options missing. I suppose this has something to do with the error message above. I have run services.msc and found that all remote desktop services show running status.

Unable to copy & paste files using remote desktop connection from source computer to destination

Hi All,

I have this issue.

I am using a Windows server 2008 SP2 machine from which i am trying to remote desktop a Windows server 2012 R2 machine.

I am able to RDP the machine but i am unable to copy & paste the files as in the below screenshot.

When i paste the file the paste option is grayed out.

When i initiate the Remote desktop connection i checked all the options in the Resources TAB:

Also the connection quality is set to LAN 10Mbps or Higher.

I also tried killing the rdpclip process in the destination server which i am taking the remote desktop connection and restarted the process but still no luck.

Can any one tell me how do i fix the issue.
