DNS RR and connection gateway question

$

0

We are setting up a RDS Farm with Server 2016 and will have multiple session host, collections and we've got a VM running that handles the license role and the Connection broker role.

Our farm is setup internally and the remote offices connect over a VPN so we haven't setup a RD gateway.

The session host servers are setup in DNS RR.

I've read though that you should setup an RDS farm name and point that to the connection broker and that's how people login.

We are using Dell Wyse 3040 terminals and using remote desktop, not the remote desktop apps. We have 2 collections we use.

Is this the best way to do it for our needs? If so does that require us to setup the RD connection gateway for this to work?

Thank you

Windows 2019 RDS Farm - Window Shadows

$

Hi,

I am in the process of building a new 2019 RDS farm to replace an aging 2008R2 one. I am at the point where i am ready for the UAT however i am having problems making a change apply to all users.

The problem is that the visual effects are set to not 'Show shadows under windows' which is making it almost impossible to see where one windows ends and another begins. I know this will be a problem in the UAT as the users have made similar complaints when first using the current farm.

I can switch the shadows back on fine for my user, however i cant seem to find anywhere to set this for all users across the system. The last thing i want to do is have to enable this setting for each user (~300 users) on their first login.

Is anyone aware of a group policy which can be applied to have this option set as default? I have read multiple articles online, but they are all geared towards Windows 7.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Niall

Just installed Remote desktop services on one of Windows 2012 R2 server. When attempting to add some programs in RemoteApp programs, we get this message: the remoteserver is not available on the network.

What could be the problem?

RD Gateway - Unable to connect via IP (Netbios, FQDN work fine)

I've set up an RD Gateway that connects to a number of internal servers. Everything is working fine if I connect to a server (via RD Gateway) using either the Netbios name or the FQDN, however if I try to connect using the servers IP address I get the following error:-

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer "10.XXX.XXX.XXX" for one of these reasons:

1) Your user account is not listed in the RD Gateway's permission list

2) You might have specified the remote computer in NetBIOS format (for example, computer1), but the RD Gateway is expecting an FQDN or IP address format (for example, computer1.fabrikam.com or 157.60.0.1).

Is there some configuration step I've missed on the RD Gateway to allow IP address connections?

License server for failover site

Hello,

We have created a Failover site for our RDS environment, it's separate from our current RDS environment. We will only use it in the event that our main site goes down. I've got it setup with a collection but have yet to get the license server installed. We have purchased RDS cals ( I believe they are called Open License) can we install the calls on both license servers since it will only be used if the main site is down? Assuming we don't use more licenses than we've paid for is that fine or does that break a license rule from MS?

Thank you

The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license

Hi,

I'm facing this error "The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license." while connecting remote desktop to the server (Windows Server 2012 R2).

Licensing mode was already configured, licenses were already installed and License Server was activated. But I still got errors in Licensing Diagnoser - Err 1. The licensing mode for remote desktop session host server is not configured, Err 2. The grace period for the remote desktop session host server has expired....

Any of my installed licenses are not issued to anyone. I have both Device and User CALs installed. I tried both and none is working.

Please advise how to solve this issue. As per advices from several forumns, I tried to delete "GracePeriod" registry Key but I cannot delete as Access was Denied! Please help. I've been struggling this for several weeks and none of the online tutorials seems to help me in this case. I followed following articles for Installation and configuration.

How to remove Remote Desktop Gateway Manager?

$

How can I remove Remote Desktop Gateway Manager in Windows 2016? I have a server which, after a few minutes of an idle login, logs me out with the message "Your Remote Desktop Services session ended because the remote computer didn't receive any input from you", even though the idle settings in the group policy are not enabled. This server, unlike others which don't have the problem, has RD Gateway enabled (although unused), and I can't figure out how to remove it.

I saw this advice on other posts: "To do this open your Server Manager > Remote Desktop Services (left tree) and in theDeployment Servers section, make sure you have the RD Gateway role installed and setup underDeployment Overview OR go through Manage > Remove Roles and Features and see if the RD Gateway role is checked", and "You may remove RD Gateway via Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Deployment Overview -- right-click on RD Gateway icon and choose Remove RD Gateway Servers." but when I run Server Manager, neither of these are options in my UI. If I go to Manage -> Remove Roles/Features, for roles it says "Remote Desktop Services (Not installed)", yet I have access to the Remote Desktop Gateway Manager, which, when run, shows nothing in the Managed RD Gateway Servers pane.

How to bypass Windows Server 2008 R2 RD Connection Broker

$

We just setup a Windows 2008 R2 RD Server Farm and RD Connection Broker and all seems to be working fine.  If you try to connect to a node in the farm Connection Broker will randomly pick a node and connect you to it.

My issue is this...

Sometimes you may need to force a user (not an admin user) to one specific node in the farm, can anyone tell me how to do that?

For example, suppose a user reports that they are having a problem when they are logged onto node 3 of a 4 node farm.  So to test, you want to force that user back to node 3 to see if the problem is fixed but Connection Broker keeps sending that user to node 1.

Thanks for any help,

Lamar

RDS Collection member allowing direct connections - does not require collection/farm name to be used

My setup is using a Server 2019 server as the RD Connection Broker and two Server 2016 servers as the RD Session Hosts. The roles and settings have all been configured through the RDCB's server manager menus. I am using a user account that is not a local or domain administrator to test, but has been added to the allowed users/groups for the collection.

One of the RDSHs works as expected - when trying to use that server's host name, instead of the collection name, the message pops up informing me that I cannot connect to that remote computer and must use the farm name. The other RDSH allows connections using that server's name or the collection name. It does not allow users to connect that are not configured as members of the collection's allowed users/groups.

Scratching my head as to why this other server is allowing connections without the "/admin" flag using its the hostname. I reviewed the setup in server manager, and the registry and didn't find anything that indicated the configuration was incorrect. The registry settings match what is setup from server manager.

Windows 2012 RDS Printer - Duplicated and Ghost printers...

Hi

I have this problems:
http://serverfault.com/questions/633145/rdsh-2012-r2-printers-duplicating-and-cannot-be-removed

He is talking about a patch, from Microosft.
Does anyone know if the patch is published?

Our problems is, that when we delete printers, it keep comming back.
Sometimes it come back as unspecified devices.
Other times, it slowing as a offline printers.

Our enviroment is a RDS 2012 R2 setup, with 7 servers.

The printers was assign with GPO before, but it is now manuel. The user add the printers there want.
There was always problems with GPO printers. Sometimes it dosen't slow up and so on.

If we delete all's printers in the user profile.
Delete all under HKLM\software\Microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\print\providers\client side rendering print provider

The problems is gone for some time, but it keeps getting back.

Could you point me in the right direction it will be great :)

RDWeb access to session collections return error" no computers available in the pool ... but.

$

I have a fairly large Windows 2016 RDS deployment, and growing. Consists of 2 Connection brokers (load balanced) 2 rdweb servers and 5 collections of RDS session hosts, from 1 to 4 servers in each. F5 load balancer in front of the various farms with more than one SH. Certificates are all configured and trusted.

Connection via the F5 load balancer name occurs without a hitch, connections are spread across the nodes fairly evenly and users reconnect to disconnected sessions.

The collections are published to RDWeb access. All the session hosts are enabled to allow connections. When I click on one of the collection names, I get prompted to enter credentials which i do, then I'm told there are no computers available in the pool.

If I log into one of the session hosts first, directly via rdp client to the server name, and leave a disconnected session... then access the collection via rdweb I connect to the disconnected session without issue. As long as I leave a disconnected session behind, I can connect to it via rdweb access to the collection.

This happens with every collection I have configured. I've delete and recreated them all with the same result.

If I restart the session hosts in the farm, i can occasionally, briefly, connect without having a disconnected session already in place., Once i log off i can not log on again. I get the no computers available in the pool error from then on. Also, I can't always get this to work. Sometimes I reboot the SH and still get no computers in the pool.

I've dug through event logs, looking @ connection broker client and server logs but see nothing relevant. All the SH join the collections in the broker-client logs and complain about lacking resources to allow redirection on connection but that is because I've disallowed broker load balancing that via group policy for F5 compatibility.

I'm not sure where else to look for clues. Anyone seen this?

Is it possible that RDWeb access to the collections is dependent on the load balancing done by the connection broker and that by disabling that for f5 compatibility i've broken RDWeb connections to the collection?

We have 2008 terminal servers and we are migrating to 2019 RDS. I want to keep 2008 terminal server till we fully start using 2019 RDS server. My question is can I configure 2019 terminal server licence server in the same domain along with 2008 licence server. Will there be any login issue for 2008 terminal server session?

Strange TCP connections on server

Hi,

Our SQL Server become very slow. While trying to figure it out where is the problem I noticed strange TCP connections on Resource Monitor. While nobody from outside our LAN is connected to our server I see many connections from (or to) these remote addresses:

45.227.255.152, 194.61.24.95, 185.156.177.235, 193.188.22.13

All of them are related to svchosts.exe(termsvcs), local port is 3389, remote ports are high. All those connections are greyed out. Is it OK? What all those connections means? Does anybody trying to attack our server?

I have checked server for viruses but found nothing.

Is there a log file for RDP connections?

two rds deployments in single domain

Hi all,

we have an existing rds 2012r2 deployment in our domain. On the base of 2016, we want to build up a second, new rds deployment in the same domain. I found lots of information regarding rds migration from 2012r2 to 2016, but no documents which describe storing the rds informations in the AD and local System / Database. I would like to know that the two deployments do not interfere each other.

I found a hint that it works:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/72a8e236-1782-4f19-90c1-f5d08100e81b/multiple-rds-deployments-in-the-same-domain?forum=winserverTS
"Hi , yes you can have many RDS deployments in the same domain. "

Do you know documentation where I can find these informations ?

Best Regards,

Karsten
