Remote desktop host goes to sleep after a very few minutes of inactivity

Power options have been checked. Both systems are running Windows 10 version 1909.

I have Wake on Lan on the client machine and it will reawaken the host but when it does, the sound is no longer redirected and the only solution I have found to that is to reboot the host. It will then work until the next time it goes to sleep.

I'm experiencing an issue where i can't connect through my newly installed Windows Server 2016 with RD Gateway.

I'm just getting "Your Computer can't connect to the Remote Desktop Gateway server. Contact your network administrator for assistance."

Older versions of Windows 10 doesnt have this issue...?

Any help would be appreciated.

Remote Authorization Policy issue with RemoteAPP when working offsite

Hello All,

We want to deploy RemoteAPP to some of our traveling laptops to open published apps from the RD Gateway server. When connected to the domain, this works. When we are offsite we get the message below.

I did some research and found some were successful with RemoteAPP working offsite IF they chose the option to "Allow users to connect to any network resource" within the Remote Authorization Policy settings in RD Gateway Manger.

      SO my questions are:

1) What are my options instead of using the RAP option (under  Network Resources tab) to "Allow users to connect to any network resource"? I need RemoteAPP to work but don't want to relax security this much to "ANY" network resource.

2) Under the Network Resources tab in RAP options to "Select an Active Directory Domain Services network resource group" I have been using a group we defined in active directory that included the RD gateway server, but this has prevented RemoteAPP from running (we get the error message above). I looked at Terminal server -gateway event viewer and when it will not work - it complains it cannot connect to the RD gateway server. What can I change to make the AD group option work- if at all possible??

Please let me know at your convenience

thank you,

Brian

Remote Gateway and RAP not showing AD Groups

Hi,

I'm getting an error where my external users are not able to connect via RDP. The error they keep getting back is:

When looking at the RD Gateway Manager in Resource Authorization Policies I noticed that there are no User Groups added.

When trying to add a User Group it does not show me the AD server location to search but only shows me the local machine name instead.

Any ideas why this might be?

This server is a member server and it is is on the domain but yet not showing the AD Groups.

Please advise.

Kind regards

RDP in HTML5 without RDS

Good Evening,

I would like to ask if there is a way to install RDP HTML5 client on a server that I want to connect to. I don't want to install RDS roles, as I only need administrative access from clients that I can't install RDP client on.

Enabling multiple remote desktop connections

$

Hello,

We have a heavy duty Win2k12 r2 server with enough resources and would like many developers access it using remote desktop connection. I see few articles just talking about using local group policy editor. Most of the clients have Win 10 OS. Questions:

1. Will making changes to the local group policy editor and allowing say 10 connections instead of 1 would be the right way to connect or do we need to create a license server and enable RDS inside the concerned Win2k12 r2 server?

2. If we need to enable RDS inside the concerned Win2k12 r2 server and connect to the concerned license server, do we still need to make changes to the local group policy editor of the concerned Win2k12 r2 server?

3. Some articles talk about making changes to the registry to allow multiple connections. Is this also the right way?

4. If we need to have perpetual setup (beyond 120 days) and if we need to enable RDS on the concerned Win2k12 r2 server besides connecting to a license server, is there a good step-by-step documentation that shows this?

Will greatly appreciate your early response.

Thanks.

RDS using Containers, is this supported?

I am planning on deploying a new RDS server farm using Windows Server 2019.

I am considering using one of the following two deployment options:

  1. An RDS server farm deployed as virtual machines
  2. An RDS server farm deployed as Containers in Kubernetes

Option 1 is easy, and is typically the direction I would normally take. With option 2 I am looking at using a GitOps approach which is to deploy RDS using Containers. All of our Containers use Kubernetes, and as far as I know we haven't yet deployed a Windows container in Kubernetes.

I have been able to confirm that Windows Server 2019 is supported by Kubernetes.  See: Intro windows in kubernetes

Where I am struggling is finding any official guidance from Microsoft. The only reference I have found is fairly old, and says Microsoft does not support RDS using Containers. See: Using Remote Desktop Services in Containers

Please can I have an official response from Microsoft on this subject, or if you can point me in the right direction.

Has anyone else looked into this?

Thanks in advance.

Window Remote Desktop CAL

Hi, Thanks in advance.

I have window std 2012R2 and RDS is active and Remote desktop user member is everyone.

And server access by only 10 users via 10 computers through Remote desktop connection. But we have 20 computers in the network but not connecting the server through Remote desktop by all PCs.

So my question is do we need Win Remote Desktop CAL 20 License or 10 only or don't need it. And we have 20 Win Server User CAL licenses.

Please help here.

Thanks.....

RDS Services across regions

Hi,

Can anyone please point me in the direction of being able to use 1 URL for multiple RDS deployments?

I believe an RDS gateway can be a member of multiple RDS deployments but not the Web server so if someone logs onto a webserver using the single URL they may not get the "correct" web server.

Thanks in advance

RDP issues, remote computers requires network level authentication

$

Hi,

First of all, please note this:

  • Network level authentication IS supported on all machines as per theAbout Remote Desktop Connection. So please don't ask me to check this on the about remote desktop connection window.
  • All clients are set per GPO to use the Remote Setting of the "more secure" option:
  • The problem is on random machines, all windows 7. We only have a few windows 10 machines but no issues found on those so far.
  • It doesn't matter if the RDP connection is initiated from a windows 7, windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2. The problem remains and is exactly the same.
  • The problem exists when attempting to connect RDP from personal home PCs (not managed by company GPOs and MS update schedules) over VPN

So the problem is this, first comes the first message and then the second.

It seems to have started after we deployed some Microsoft server updates, but its very inconsistent, some sites seems worse off then others, but its not all machines at any site. We haven't even done client updates yet.

Again, please don't give me a link to an old post or blog saying that I need to enable network level authentication, as shown by the top screenshot, it is already enabled/supported.

I already spent hours googling this. Please, I want responses from people who have actually had the exact same symptoms and issues or someone who has an idea that I haven't already clearly stated that I've checked above already.

Thank you.

Alternate port in deployment for RD Gateway

$

I have a scenario where I would like to use a port other than 443 for a remote desktop gateway. However, I've found that using both the GUI and Set-RDDeploymentGatewayConfiguration gives me no option to specify a port. The field is referred to strictly as the FQDN and fails if I try to use a colon with a port. The gateway service itself supports the change, but this will not allow me to publish a remoteapp using the alternate gateway port. Any ideas?

Windows 2012 RDS Printer - Duplicated and Ghost printers...

Hi

I have this problems:
http://serverfault.com/questions/633145/rdsh-2012-r2-printers-duplicating-and-cannot-be-removed

He is talking about a patch, from Microosft.
Does anyone know if the patch is published?

Our problems is, that when we delete printers, it keep comming back.
Sometimes it come back as unspecified devices.
Other times, it slowing as a offline printers.

Our enviroment is a RDS 2012 R2 setup, with 7 servers.

The printers was assign with GPO before, but it is now manuel. The user add the printers there want.
There was always problems with GPO printers. Sometimes it dosen't slow up and so on.

If we delete all's printers in the user profile.
Delete all under HKLM\software\Microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\print\providers\client side rendering print provider

The problems is gone for some time, but it keeps getting back.

Could you point me in the right direction it will be great :)

RDS idle session limit error

Hi all,

We are setting up an RDS environment on Windows server 2019. The only collection we have has a third-party application.

The problem is that we have the Idle session limit set to 8 hours, but it seems that it is not working because we see users with 1 day and one hour in idle time.

Is there any way to check why it may be happening? I don't see logs or events.

Thanks and regards,

Trouble with RemoteFX

$

Hello! I have a Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V cluster I recently added Quadro K620s to to gain DirectX in my VMs (specifically an Windows 10 Edu VM). I've run into an issue. I have the VM fully patched and the 3D graphics adapter installed but my VM isn't working right. When I first boot it up with the 3D adapter, I can't RDP to it. I can login with the console and I can see in Device Manager that the RemoteFX device is there and functioning but I can't get RDP to work. Now if I reboot the virtual machine again. then I can RDP to it but the RemoteFX device goes Code 43 in Device Manager. I've been looking through forums from all the way back in 2014 but they all say it should just work and don't really come to a solution so I'm posting here. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Outlook started as RemoteApp: "New Mail" Window shows Content of previous E-Mail

$

Hi All,

we use a Windows Server 2016 RDS Deployment with three virtual Machines: the first VM is the classic Terminalserver Desktop where all users connect to from their client PCs, the two others are RDS Hosts with some RemoteApps, like Outlook 2016.

Sometimes this happens:

1. a User connects to the terminalserver by RDP ( not using RD Gateway, Native Port 3389 )

1. the User starts Outlook as Remoteapp on the Terminalserver ( RDP Icon on the Desktop, Connecting by RD Gateway )

2. the User clicks on "New Mail", a window opens, he writes the content and sends it, the windows closes, everything is fine ;-)

3. the User clicks on "New Mail" ( or wants to forward an existing mail ), a windows opens - this window shows the content of the previous e-mail (from 2.) - it is not possible to hit or edit the elements in the windows, it's just graphic ...

This behaviour is confusing the users.

Workaround: resizing the windows solves the problem, after this the user use the window, can edit ...

It seems that the graphical content is cached somewhere, so we disabled "bitmap caching" in the rdp Settings on the Client PC and in the rdp Settings for Outlook on the Terminalserver - nothing changed.

Sometimes the behavior occurs after writing 10 to 15 E-Mail, sometimes after every E-Mail. There is no regularity. The Load on the VMs isn't high, enough RAM.

Do you have any ideas ?

Best Regards,

Karsten

RDS Server (2016) design requirements for TLS 1.2 only.

$

Hi All,

The basics...

I want to build 3x "jump box" RDS Servers in 3x different departmental subnets with firewalls between each subnet in a single domain, single forest.

Currently only the required ADDS, DNS and DHCP network ports / flows are allowed between each departmental subnet. All other services for each department sit within their own subnets....RDP will be the only exception...I need to be able to assign security groups the ability to RDS into either DEV / UAT / OFFICE networks from the OFFICE network where our users log into and sit from a domain perspective.

I have got all 3 jump box RDS servers working but only if I leave TLS 1.0 / 1.1 /1.2 enabled on the RDS servers...my company security policy requires us to use TLS1.2only and have the older two protocols disabled.

Where and how can this configuration be made and changed, in my EventVwr checks and online reading it seems I need to address 1 or 2 or both of the below to work.

1. WinRM

I'm currently unable to PSRemote from one subnet to another. Will addressing the required ports and directional flows for WinRM resolve this alone or...

2. TLS Requirements

Do I need to somehow address TLS 1.2 config - this confuses me as I though TLS 1.2 was default for Server 2016?

As always, thanks in advance for your time...

durrie.

multiple GPUs on RDS session host server

We are currently using Physical server for RDS session host boxes. Each server has one Quadro P2000 GPU in it with the h.264 enabled.

If we put in a second P2000 GPU into each server would the Server be able to use it or would it only use one of them?

Thank you

Windows 2019 RDS Farm - Window Shadows

$

Hi,

I am in the process of building a new 2019 RDS farm to replace an aging 2008R2 one. I am at the point where i am ready for the UAT however i am having problems making a change apply to all users.

The problem is that the visual effects are set to not 'Show shadows under windows' which is making it almost impossible to see where one windows ends and another begins. I know this will be a problem in the UAT as the users have made similar complaints when first using the current farm.

I can switch the shadows back on fine for my user, however i cant seem to find anywhere to set this for all users across the system. The last thing i want to do is have to enable this setting for each user (~300 users) on their first login.

Is anyone aware of a group policy which can be applied to have this option set as default? I have read multiple articles online, but they are all geared towards Windows 7.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Niall
