RDS 2012 - RemoteApp is flickering
Certficate warnings
Hi,
I've had some certificate warnings in the past and thought it was a good idea to fix it by assigning my public wildcard certificate to my internal RDSH servers.
as it turned out in this topic
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6a70ed2e-46af-4891-92ff-c8bab6ec94a3/customrdpproperty-use-redirection-server-name?forum=winserverTS it wasn't that good idea.
So that was rolled back.
But now the certificate warnings are back.
'This certificate is not from a trusted authority'
When I take a look at the certificate that is linked to the RDP-TCP listener it was issued to server1.domain.local and issued by server1.domain.local.
We have an internal CA, but that is currently not set up to provide certificates automatically.
To get rid of these warnings I need to request a certificate from the CA and again change the certificate linked to the RDP-TCP listener. (http://www.vkernel.ro/blog/replace-the-default-self-signed-certificate-on-a-rd-session-host-server)
Or is there a better way?
Migrate terminal server licences from Win 2008 to 2012R2
Hi
We have old Win 2008 SP2 Terminal server licensing server. Is it possible to migrate licenses from there to 2012R2 licensing server and how to do that?

Limit number of sessions per user or group
Hi.
I´m working on a project where I need to allow multiple sessions ( already done ), but limit the number of concurrent sessions on a RDS farm...
At the moment, we're using only one RDS server ( R&D stage ), but in the future, there'll be a farm with RDS Connection Broker and many RDS Session Hosts.
I've come to the conclusion that the best approach is to create a custom GPO, apply to the RDS Session Hosts, and use a vbscript or powershell to block the logon when the number of sessions reaches the defined limit.
I'd like to achieve a group based ( Groups: 1RDSsession, 2RDSsession and so on ... ) user logon limit. I have some ideas in mind for a single server, and a possible solution for a farm.
But before spending time on this "adventure" ( I really like this kind of challenge :) ), I'd like to know if Windows2012 provides any means for doing this kind of control.
I know there's a per server sessions limit, but that doesn't solve my problem.
Thanks in advance!
Set licensing server on 2012 R2
I have a Windows 2012 R2 server running with domain controller, hyper-v, remote desktop licensing (SERVER-1). Remote desktop licensing is configured with our RDP licensing (per user).
In hyper-v on this server, I have a Windows 2012 R2 server member of the domain, File and Storage, Remote Desktop connection broker, remote desktop gateway, remote desktop session host, remote desktop web access (SERVER-2).
On SERVER-2, when I RDP into the server I get a message that licensing is not setup and if I go into RD Licensing Manager it says Licensing mode is 'Not configured'. How do I set the licensing mode? I keep finding instructions for 2008 R2 which tells you to open "Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration", but I don't have that.
Thanks. How to log off a user after closing an application on a terminal server through Powershell?
We have a few users that only uses one application.
In group policy I changed the shell to a powershell script and it starts the application perfectly.
But when I close the appliation nothing happens (of course).
Does anybody know how I can do this?
Perhaps provide a working script?
Thanks in advance!
Printing sorted over remote desktop / terminal server
Hello.
We have a customer that uses a terminal server (windows server 2012 R2).
Office users connect thru remote desktop for normal use.
Most printers are installed on the serverside and no issue's there.
The reception however has a local printer (HP 2055d) over USB.
So she uses this one for some documents that are for her eyes only.
Computer OS is windows 7 pro 64bit.
Problem that happens is when she wants to printed sorted. So a contract that has to be printed 2 times. She wants page 1,2,3 and then page 1,2,3. if she does it local with a pdf or notepad it works. If she does it from the remote desktop session it's not sorting. It's printing, but not sorting, so page 1,1,2,2,3,3. I thought it was the printer but at my office with a different (hp) server that is connected over the network (IP) it also isn't working when connected to the terminal server.
When connected to a different server (the file server / dc) it IS working as expected.
I have installed latest HP Universal Printer Driver on the local client, and @ the terminal server.
What could be the reason sorted printing is not working?
Windows 10 RDP
Hi,
I've got 2 separate colos with the following servers setup, clients can access the Remote Apps though the cloud and the employee's can access the Servers using remote desktop connection but when I try to access with Windows 10 I get the following error from either cloud or using the rd gateway to access the servers using remote desktop connection.
Error: RemoteApp Disconnection
"Your Computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to. Contact your network administrator for assistance."
The first setup is the following
Windows 2012
4 x Servers with RD Session Host
2 x Servers with RD License and RD Connection Broker (High Availability)
2 x Servers with RD Gateway and RD Web Access
Windows 2012 R2
4 x Servers with RD Session Host
2 x Servers with RD License and RD Connection Broker (High Availability)
2 x Servers with RD Gateway and RD Web Access
The setuo is default and the error is happening on the RD Gateway computers.
I've tried to change the security of the collection but it made no difference, I've applied all the current patches to the RD Gateway computers.
On the Gateway I have a user group to access the but there are no computer groups in the connection authorization policy.
The resource authorization policy has the same user group and access to all network resources.
I've tried to find a solution but haven't been able to find much about RDP 10.0

Disable screen lock only for RemoteApp Programs
Hello,
I am currently building a new Remote Desktop farm in Windows 2008 R2 with 2 hosts who holds the roles of Session Host, Web Access and Connection Broker (using DNS Round Robin and failover cluster management).
The client will be Thin Client starting an RDP session which gives them a full desktop, and also Windows XP and Windows 7 computers.
The Windows XP and Windows 7 computers will use the Remote Desktop farm to access some applications on them via the RD Web Access (using single sign on).
And here is the problem: when the users start a RemoteApp Program, and this is idle for more than 10 minutes, they get a lock screen and have to re-enter their credentials.
I know I could disable this by GPO (using loopback) by disabling the screensaver, but this will disable the screensaver for all users, including the ones who have a full desktop using a thin client.
The goal is to disable the screen lock for RemoteApp Programs only, but keep it for the full desktop users.
Extra info: users can sometimes log on to a thin client and receive a full desktop, or use RemoteApp Programs from a Windows computer with the same credentials.
Remote desktop not working after uninstalling remote desktop Session Host Server
Hello,
I'm having a problem with my Windows Server 2008 R2. After uninstalling the Remote Desktop Session Host Server Role, I can't connect to the machine from remote anymore. I've tried with clients both from Windows 8 and other Windows Server 2008 R2 but with no luck.
When I try to connect, I get the error message that the Remote Desktop client can't connect to the remote compute for one of these reasons:
1) remote access to the server is not enabled.
2) the remote computer is turned off.
3) the remote computer is not available on the network.
On the Server Manager, Remote Desktop is flagged as Enabled. In the System Properties - Remote tab, the option "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)" is checked.
The computer is ON and it is connected to the network. I can browse the Internet and the server can be pinged from remote. The Firewall is completely OFF (public, private and domain profile).
I ran the Remote Desktop client both with the IP address and the domain name....same result.
Is there anything else I should check? I am honestly clueless about the cause of this issue.
Thank you,
Filippo
User keeps getting a TEMP profile - The user does not have a profile on the server (C:\Users) or the Registry (ProfileList)

Connecting old Thin client (HP T5300) to 2012 RDS. "Because of a Security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer"
Hello,
I am having an issue with thin clients on my new RDS configuration. All Windows 7/10 etc instances of MSTSC connect to RDS fine. I have some Thin clients previously configured to 2003 Terminal Services that need reconfiguring to 2012 RDS.
I receive the error when trying to connect "Because of a Security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer".
In the Server event logs under RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTSOperational, I see that it logs on and then an Event ID 103 "The disconnect reason is 0"
I have ensured that "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication" is NOT set, but I still receive the error. I am not sure where to look next. I read on Technet that possibly a cert is corrupt, but other Operating systems connect with no issue.
My set up is one collection with one server and I am attempting to connect directly to the FQDN of that one server.
If I have missed any details out, please let me know. Any help gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Dan

Hello Guys,
Need some help.
I was having a certificate mismatch when trying to access my rdweb connection, because i have a public certificate that didn't match the broker name.
I used Set-RDPublishedName.ps1 to change the fqdn to match my certificate name, and now i get the following error.
Any ideias?
Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server Event ID 20499
I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2
I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.
I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499
RDS Installation Error - Server 2012 R2 Standard
I am trying to install RDS on Server 2012 R2. Its getting failed and when I checked the events logs it is showing error as " The Remote Desktop Management service depends on the following service: MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID.
This service might not be installed. "
I tried to search WID in Features but couldn't find anything by that name.
Could you please help me on this?
Installed Roles: AD DS, DNS, IIS, WDS.
Thanks in advance

RDS 2012R2 - HA (RDSH) testing
Just thought I'd document a few more observations during HA testing of the Hosts....
Picture the scene; 2 x RDSH servers in a single collection publishing applications. Collection is configured for HA. Lets call them RDSH-01 and RDSH-02 (imaginative I know!).
Client fires up application and this time the Collection Broker selects RDSH-01. Connection is apparent in RDS Server Manager > Connections.
Now pull the NIC/Disable NIC on RDSH-01
- At immediate application launch, new users or those with active or disconnected sessions may attempt to connect to the 'off-line' server (active/disconnected to the previous session directed by the Collection Broker) but this will fail as a connection cannot
be established. Two error messages appear at app launch, firstly 'Remote Desktop cannot connect to the remote computer.....' followed by 'There are no available computers in the pool....' This second message is presented for users attempting connection
after around 5 minutes.
- Approximately 10 minutes later RDS appears to have acknowledged RDSH-01 is 'off-line' and at application launch, new or previously disconnected/active users are correctly assigned to RDSH-02.
Lessons learned:
RDS 2012R2 takes around 10 minutes to identify a failed RDSH and to inform the CB.
Questions
1. Am I correct in thinking there's an RDSH heartbeat of some description using a 10 minute time frame?
2. Is there documentation providing a detailed explanation of the RDS HA implementation?
Thanks
