Win Server 2012, TLS 1.2 and Remote Desktop

Hi all,

I have a request to limit TLS access on one of our AWS instances running Win Server 2012 to only 1.2. However my concern is that if I make that change, I will not be able to access the site via RD if it is running TLS 1.0. How can I check this and what steps will I need to do to make sure that I do not lock myself out?

Thanks for any insight into this.

Remote Desktop to RDS Farm?

$

I have just built a new RDS infrastructure to replace our old RDS 2012 setup

The old setup was a single server running RDSH, RDWEB and RD Connection Broker
The new setup has 3 servers, two RDSH servers and another running RDWEB and RD Connection Broker

Our users used to use Web Apps but also RDP to the server name

Now that I have two RDSH servers how do they RDP to the 'Farm Name' ?
Do I simply set up a DNS entry with two IPs and just get them to RDP to that?

Many thanks

Windows Server 2008 Date format change in RDP Users

$

Dear sir

Recently i have formatted my server and re-instaled windows server 2008 enterprise edition. Our clients are accessing this server thorugh remote desktop connection and they will be able to logon to application and if they close the application they will be logged out from the server. They are not allow to see or to do any other activity on the server  and server desktop.

My problem is the clients are getting the date format dd/mm/yyyy but they wanted to have dd-mm-yyyy. I have done configuration changes on the regional setup (administrative tab).

Before changing the above setup there are users already created. For those users the date format is showing dd/mm/yyyy but if i remove that users or add new users i am getting the new format as dd-mm-yyyy.

Is any way i can change the date format to all the users without deleting the user account.

Your help will be very helpful.

Thanks

Software Install

Hi,

We run multiple 2012R2 remote desktop servers, users are profile based.

Can I somehow limit what software each user gets, say 15 get the program I'm about to install, and the others who don't need it, doesn't run on their profiles?

I could install it on each users profile, but is there a better way to do and control this?

Thanks

Remote Desktop into Server 2016 gives black screen. Same issue as bug recently found/fixed in 2012 R2

Is anyone aware of a fix to this issue?

See the post from Sasha (Microsoft): here

Here is a post to the MS KB acknowledging and providing a resolution for 2012 R2:here

To resolve the issue when it happens, i need to kill the TermService service (it won't stop normally as it is in a deadlock state). I can then start the service again and it's business as usual until it happens again.

I can't see any info about this in RDS 2016... Anyone else? MS?

Thanks,

Stephen

RD Web and RD Gateway Prompts for remote users

$

I've setup several RDS solutions for use in a single AD domain but am now trying to get a definitive answer to a question about credential prompts for remote or "non-domain" users accessing a remote RDS solution.

The scenario I'm looking at has an RDS solution (with public facing RD Web and RD Gateway) configured with the correct SSL certs, etc. in Domain A and remote users in an untrusted Domain B.

My understanding is that Domain B users will be prompted twice for their Domain A credentials, when they login to the Web Access portal and then again when they're re-directed to the RD Gateway via the RDP file? I understand that they won't then have to login to the Session Host if the "Use RD Gateway Credentials" option has been ticked.

Is the above correct or can we reduce the number of logins required for the Domain B users?

Cheers for now

Russell

The trust relationship between the primary domain and the trusted domain failed.

Hi,

I am getting this message in the application event log ( relating to IIS) when trying to connectusers to our RDS environment from a trusted domain. It was working earlier in the day and the domain trust is working fine on all servers as I can add and remove users from file shares to test, as well as search the trusted domain list.

A work around seems to be an IISreset on the gateway server, but that is not good as it kicks existing connections off.

Is there anything else I can check on why the trust fails after a period of time? I am running RDS GW on 2012 R2, with 3 x 2012 R2 session servers, and both AD's are 2008 R2 in different forests.

DNS forwarding is setup and both domains can ping eachother servers without any problem.

Thanks

Unable to retrieve the session collection properties

Hi,

we're facing the following issue while trying to add new Remote Desktop Session Hosts into
a session host collection  : "Unable to retrieve the session collection properties".

The server can be added into the deployment but can't be added into the session host collection and the message above
is returned. This error never happened before and is ennoying as we need to deploy more Servers/Collections.

A collegue noticed that adding a couple of servers at once (from the GUI) succeeded ...
I can't find anything related on EventViewer (Brokers / DataBase server)

Is this a known bug ? I can't find anything related on Microsoft support.microsoft.com
Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks.

I searched everywhere and i cant find an answer. I tried enabled fips, it worked but the remoteapps failed to launch and crashes.

I tried setting the rdp security layer and that didnt help, the rdm still failed to start.

The only thing that work is enabled tls 1.0 which we need to disabled.

Any ideas. Thank you

Edge/Chrome browser and Remote Desktop Web Access with RemoteApp

$

I guess most of you know that if you use Microsoft Edge or Chrome to access the RD Web Access site (2012 R2) it will not automatically start the RemoteApps but the browser will download the .rdp file and the user have to start it "manually". Anyone solved the way around this or is it just the way it is because it's ActiveX based? I don't think 2016 solves this.

I know you can publish the RemoteApp shortcuts on the user's start menu via the Control Panel -> RemoteApp and Desktop Connections but this is not a solution for us since most of our users are BYOD users.

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

Stuck on signing out screen when connecting into a Server2012R2 machine.

Hi all,

I RDP into this server, it gives me to the company security warning and has me click OK, from there it goes to the signing out screen with the rotating dots and just sits there indefinitely.

If I log into the server using the console on our VM host, after entering my credentials it immediately goes to the singing in dot circle.

I suspect this has something to do with way I may have disconnected from the server with a previous RDP session, the only fix I've found is to have someone else log in and disconnect/log me off.

Any ideas?

RDS Profiles not Roaming on 2016 Servers (when using AD profile setting), but works with GPO

$

Hey Everyone,

I'm experimenting with 2016 RDS, as I want to upgrade our 2012R2 Session Host servers. I have 2012R2 domain controllers (if that matters).

I am noticing that roaming RDS profiles isn't working at all on my 2016 RDS session host servers. A user logs in and gets a local profile, and when they log out, the profile isn't uploaded at all. It's basically just a regular local profile. I have the field set to \\fileserver\rdsprofiles in AD. This has worked fine in RDS in 2003, 08R2, and 2012R2.

However, if I create a GPO and set the profile location that way (Computer - Policies - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - RDS - Session Host - Profiles - Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming User Profile), roaming profiles are created on the share and everything works fine, and I can see a new .v6 profile being created. Logging in and out roams the profile properly.

Any thoughts as to why? Has the AD 'Remote Desktop Services Profile' attribute been depreciated for 2016?

I have tried lots of troubleshooting, deleting profiles, new shares, etc, I can't seem to get it to work with the AD attribute (but works fine when set with GPO).

EDIT: Tried this in a homelab setup as well (all 2016 servers), and same thing - only the GPO setting takes effect.

Server 2016: Failed to find a virtual desktop with the specified name

Hello,

I have a Server 2016 RDS for Personal unmanaged virtual Desktop Collection. I see in the Collection a VM that is not assigned to a User.

I like use the powershell to assign the free VM to a User:
Set-RDPersonalVirtualDesktopAssignment -ConnectionBroker $CB -CollectionName $Collection -User $User -VirtualDesktopName $vc

Output: Failed to find a virtual desktop with the specified name VC20029. Specify a valid virtual desktop Name.

If I use a virtualDesktopName that is allready assigned

Output:  The virtual desktop is already assigned to user domain\username

If I use: Get-RDVirtualDesktop -CollectionName $Collection | Where-Object{$_.VirtualDesktopName -eq $vc}

Output:

CollectionName       VirtualDesktopName   State        ProvisioningStatus   HostName
--------------       ------------------   -----        ------------------   --------
My-VDI               VC20029              STOPPED      UNKNOWN              Server01

Why isn't assignment not working?

Thankful for any Suggestion Holger

RemoteApp - Pop-ups hidden behind main window

$

We are using RemoteApp in Windows Server 2012 to publish Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

Sometimes when the user clicks on something inside the application that generates a popup of a new windows, this new window is opened behind the main windows. This causes confusion to the users.

I have found the following Kb articles/hotfixes that seem to describe the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2580346
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2384602
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983533

However, all these hotfixes are applicable only to Windows 2008 (R2), and not Windows Server 2012.

Are there any updated hotfixes for 2012 somewhere?

How does one specify licensing mode in RDS on Server 2016

$

In RD Licensing Diagnoser on Server 2016, I get a message that the licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured. How does one set this. I cannot find the "RD Session Host Configuration Tool" like I we have used in the past with Windows Server 2008 R2 to accomplish this task.

Thanks
