Standard RDS setup with 10 licenses

$

I am a newbie as far as Windows 2012 R2 goes. And I am using a dedicated server on GoDaddy, not my own machine. I set up RDS and related items on the server. I purchased 10 CALs and installed them. Everything went well, I thought. But now when I run RD Licensing Diagnoser, it says that the licensing mode for the RD Session Host is not configured. I read that I should select Remote Desktop Services in the Roles and click the Overview tab to access the Session Host. When I do that, I get the following message:

"You are currently logged on as local administrator on the computer. You must be logged on as a domain user to manage servers and collections."  That makes no sense to me. I believe that I installed something out of order and now it's screwed up.

What do I need to do now? Uninstall everything and start over?

Thank you.

Disable IE Enhanced Security does not work RDS-Session Host 2008 R2

Hi there,

we have a problem with disabling the IE ESC on Server 2008 R2. It's a fully patched Server 2008 R2 Standard english. When installing the RDS-Session Host Role the IE ESC for Users was enabled. After adding the role IE ESC was automatically disabled.

When a new user logs on to the system, IE ESC is still enabled. When we Reset the IE (Advanced Tab, Reset) IE ESC is disabled for the users. But that's nothing we can deal with.

After searching the web, I found a similar Thread here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsserver2008r2rds/thread/5bd202d3-7f77-4631-9afc-d6a8a7821c42

What I figured out:

1. When RDS-Session Host Role is enabled, IE ESC for Users is automatically disabled. Why?

2. When enabling it for users, IE ESC is still disabled. When we Reset IE, IE ESC is enabled.

3. When disabling it for users, IE ESC is still enabled. When we Reset IE, IE ESC is disabled.

I have also reproduced this on a test machine (this machine is not patched)

Any suggestions how to disable IE ESC for all users without resetting IE first?

Allow users to connect to workstation from RDS HTML5 web client?

Hi Guys,

Wondering if there's anyway we can allow users to connect to a workstation from the new HTML 5 Web Client? From all my research and playing with the product, it seems only RD Session Hosts and Virtual Desktop hosts can be added to the portal. Seems like such a waste as we have this HTML 5 RDP client that would be perfect for our needs, except we can't publish extra RDP endpoints.

MS Store CAL buy

Hello everyone here,

I just have a quick question regarding CALs. If you want to buy for example 5 Per User CALs here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/windows-server-2016-remote-desktop-services/dg7gmgf0ds1h/0005 in description is written: "This CAL permits one device (used by any user) to use Remote Desktop Services functionality on any of your servers." That part got me confused because I thought that with Per User CAL, you define on RDS server how many users can be connected not matter the device they are using, because if you wanted to define how many devices would have an access to the RDS server you would buy Device CALs.

Thank you in advance,

RDP session not logging off after application is closed

  Hello,

I am trying out RemoteApp in Windows 2008. I managed to publish a simple application, and I am able to connect to it remotely using an .rdp file.
The application works fine, but the issue is that when I close the application on my remote machine, the session just gets disconnected, it doesn't log off. I have tried connecting from different clients, and I get the same result: After I close the application, I can see the disconnected session on the Win2008 server.

How can I make the session to automatically log off after the application is closed by the client ?

        What am I missing ?

Thank you for any suggestion.

Error while changing SSL Certificate RDS 2012

Hi,

An 2012 RDS environment is running without any issues since one year. Simple configuration: Wildcard Certificate, 1 RD Gateway, 1 RD Webacess, 2 RD Session Hosts.

Now, that the ssl certificate is next to the expiration date, i've tried to import the new certificate by the wizard in deployment properties.

In the all of the role services, a warning occured: Warning - Could not configure the certificate on one or more servers.
I've noticed, that the certificate was copied in the cert store on the RD Gatway, but the IIS still had the binding to the previous certificate.

Mysteriously Get-RDCertificates shows the correct certificates for all roles

In the eventlog there are failures recorded:

Any ideas?

RDS 2016 - TLS 1.2 Supported on Connection Broker Connections?

$

Okay, we currently have an RDS 2016 Configuration, with the following:

- 1 x RDS 2016 License Manager server

- 2 x RDS 2016 Gateway/Web Access servers

- 2 x RDS 2016 Connection Broker servers

- 4 x RDS 2016 Session Host servers (2 x Session Hosts on load-balanced servers)

The RDS 2016 Connection Broker server is configured in High Availability Mode, and stores it's database on a SQL 2016 Cluster. The initial setup doesn't allow you to specify SQL 2016 *until* you later configure CB to be in High Availability Mode, so it's my understanding that it initially uses a WID (Windows Internal Database) and continues to do so even after configuring High Availability Mode?

Is there any way of "removing" the dependency between the CB and WID, as this TechNet Article seems to suggest that TLS 1.2 can't be configured if WID is involved in the installation?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4036954/disabling-tls1-0-can-cause-rds-connection-broker-or-rdms-to-fail

The reason for asking this, is that we configured the SCHANNEL registry settings to disable everything apart from TLS 1.2, and this broke the connection between RDS and the Connection Broker. The only way to "recover" this was to re-enable TLS 1.0 (TLS 1.1 didn't work).

Any ideas appreciated.

Many thanks.

How to change password in RDP session

In my situation all RDP clients are remote over the internet. their passwords expire every 60 days. How can the user change their password before it expires? CTRL ALT DEL will not work because it takes you to a password change on your local machine. Note the users have no access to a desktop only a single application is forced to run through the user profile.

one user cannot connect trough remote-app-rdp file

Hi,

Since this morning i have a problem with one of my users and loggin in remotely trough terminal services remote apps.
Is the user logs in on the classic way, so just start an rdp session to the terminal server with his credentials he can login perfectly, and do everything he wants.
If he starts one of his remoteapp-rdp files it doesn't work (if you click on show more details, you see the green backgrounf of the server, and after about 10 minutes he asks for credentials again, and you see again the green backgound)
The problem stays if you try to start the remote-app-rdp from another computer, with the same credentials of this user.
All other users are loggin in and working fine with the same remote-app-rdp files (with ofcourse their own credentials).

On the server the following error/warning pops up in the event viewer, if that user wants to .

Restrict RD Web users from Accessing the RD gateway server directly

$

Hello All,

We have used Active Directory to create a user group to limit who can access our RD Web access site. These same users can log directly into the RD Gateway server through Remote Desktop though. Is there a way to prevent the users from having direct access to the server? I know the users do not have admin rights, but we would like to limit who is on the server. Would removing them from the Remote Desktop users group local to that server break their RD Web access? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thank you in advance,

Brian

Desktop shortcut in RDWeb portal constantly disappearing after adding an additional RD Connection Broker for high availability.

$

Hello,

We have noticed an issue after adding an RDCB (Remote Desktop Connection Broker) to our existing collection for high availability. One thing to note is that all of our RDS servers are running Windows Server 2016 Standard.

Here is what our situation was before adding in the RDCB:

  • Running one RDCB
  • Running one RDWA (RD Web Access)
  • Running one RDG (RD Gateway)
  • Running three RDSH (RD Session Host)
  • All three of the RDSHs are set up to publish RemoteApps AND desktops. This was done by editing the ShowInPortalvalue from 0 to 1 in the below registry key. This made it so the desktop shortcut would appear in the RDWeb portal.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\CentralPublishedResources\PublishedFarms\(collection name)\RemoteDesktops\(collection name)

  • We found that if we ever made changes to our RemoteApps (i.e. publishing a new remoteapp, unpublishing one, etc.) then that above registry value would default back to 0, thus resulting in the Desktop shortcut in the RDWeb portal to disappear. We were okay with this because we rarely made changes to our remoteapps, and it was just a part of our procedure to add the desktop shortcut back in.

Now comes the interesting part. Here is our situation now:

  • Running two RDCBs for high availability.
  • Running one RDWA (RD Web Access)
  • Running one RDG (RD Gateway)
  • Running three RDSHs (RD Session Host)
  • Whenever we make ANY changes to ANYof our RDS Collection settings, that ShowInPortal value defaults back to 0. The strange thing is that it doesn't happen immediately. We find that theShowInPortal value defaults back to 0 after a short amount of random time (5-15 minutes). And when we say any changes, we really mean it. Something as simple as disallowing new connections to any of our RDSHs (so that we can patch servers during business hours), causes the ShowInPortal to revert to 0. This was never the case before we added a second RDCB for high availability.
  • Everything worked great with one RDCB. As soon as we added the second RDCB, then we noticed this issue.
  • When the issue does occur, we have to change the ShowInPortal value to 1 on both RDCBs for the desktop shortcut to appear in the RDWeb portal

Now we're in a position where our RDS Collection is very fragile. Any setting we touch causes thatShowInPortal value to revert to 0 and it's a pain in the butt. As a hacky way to work around this issue, we've set up a scheduled task that automatically sets theShowInPortal value to 1 every single minute. This, obviously, is not a solution we want to continue with and is more of a band-aid approach until we can find the root issue.

So my question becomes, does anyone know why adding in a second RDCB for high availability cause theShowInPortal value to reset after any change we make? Again, this was never the case before when we had only one RDCB.

Required firewall ports between RD Session Host + RD Broker

$

I am having some difficulties in getting RDS to work in a highly restricted environment in Azure where all network traffic needs to be explicitly allowed in firewall rules.

In the configuration, the RD Brokers and RD Session Hosts are on different subnets.

I have reviewed documentation such as:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16164.rds-2012-which-ports-are-used-during-deployment.aspx

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Enterprise-Mobility-Security/RD-Gateway-deployment-in-a-perimeter-network-Firewall-rules/ba-p/246873

I tried allowing outbound TCP 5985 from the RD Session hosts to the RD Brokers.

That didn't help.

The only thing that works is allowing all outbound traffic between the RD Session Hosts and the RD Broker subnets.

Azure isn't very user friendly when it comes to trying to figure out exactly what traffic is being blocked by NSGs.

Can anyone assist with exactly what traffic needs to be allowed outbound from the RD Gateway to the RD Broker?

Thanks.

Remote desktop collection is missing properties I would like to add

$

Hello everyone,

I am using Server 2012 Datacenter in a VMware environment. What I am trying to do is have one of our Remote Desktop collections, when clicked on through RD Web Access, already have the computer name and the RD gateway server when open/launched (custom .rdp file).

I have seen articles saying in 2008 server you could do this through a GUI, but with Server 2012, Server Manager doesn't allow you to add the custom properties I am looking for. Instead, it is suggested, well implied, to use powershell. Below are the options I'd like to add but while trying to use powershell, I receive the overly posted, "You cannot call a method on a null-valued expression." At looking at the Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration command, no where on the page does it say it returns an object/value/something, and all variables I pass accept strings. I know I am missing something but I am unsure what. Here is a how I am trying to use the above command:

Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CollectionName "Faculty" -CustomRdpProperty "full address:s:Server.SomeDomain.ORG"

Below are several other properties I'd like to add where I have found that by adding `n in between commands, it should work, but I wanted to start with one property before jumping ahead. In addition, I'd like to add a custom certificate but that isn't as important as getting the computer name and default gateway addresses to show up, and not have the end user type it in.

gatewayusagemethod:i:2
gatewayprofileusagemethod:i:1
gatewaycredentialssource:i:0
full address:s:Server.SomeDomain.ORG
gatewayhostname:s:Server.SomeDomain.org

I appreciate everyone for reading this and look forward to any help and/or insight. I had links to articles/technet but because my account is not verified yet, I couldn't link to them. If you have any questions, I will be more than happy to assist.

Sincerely,

Mike

Can I remove Flash from a Windows 2016 RDS (broker) server?

$

0

From what I can gather, Adobe Flash is automatically installed when you add the RDS Broker role to a Windows 2016 server...gee great...love it...not.

I am assuming I use something like this to remove it:

dism /online /remove-package /packagepath:”C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Adobe-Flash-For-Windows-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.14393.0.mum”

However, "should" I do this?  In other words, will something undesirable break with the RDS deployment if I do that?  I am guessing it is ONLY needed for Internet Explorer...and so removing it is OK.  But I wanted to confirm with the experts on this forum first.

Thanks

RDP - Slow initial connection

When making theFIRST Remote Desktop Connection between any of the following:

Local Computer                Remote Computer

Windows 7                          Windows 7

Windows 7                          Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008    Windows 7

Windows Server 2008    Windows Server 2008

there is a 20-30 second delay before the connection is established.  On some versions of Remote Desktop client you will see the message “Securing Remote Connection” during the delay.   Once the first connection has been established the delay disappears for any new connections which occur within the next 3-5 minutes.  After 3-5 minutes the delay reoccurs.

The delay does NOT occur for the following connections:

Local Computer                Remote Computer

Windows 7                          Windows XP

Windows 7                          Windows Server 2003

Windows Server 2003    Windows 7

Windows Server 2003    Windows Server 2008

There are no certificates nor terminal services gateways involved.  This is on a LAN connection.

RDP Login Screen changing cursor focus after selecting the password field

$

With our 2012 servers we are seeing unexpected behavior on the login screen that we did not previously see with other versions. On the login screen we are presented with fields for username and password, and the default cursor focus is username. The username is usually already populated, so we click on the password field, some times after the cursor has appeared in the password field it will without interaction or prompting immediately return to the username field.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I can't seem to find anything when searching, but maybe I am not searching the right places.

Trigger Terminal Server (RDS) Grace period again temporarily

Dear Support,

Could Terminal Server (RDS) Grace period be available again for running RDSH server after deleting RegKey (GracePeriod) in the environment without RD Licensing Server temporarily?

Reference:

Please try to delete REG_BINARY under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\RCM\GracePeriod.
You will need to take ownership and give administrator Full Control to be able to delete this key.

Thanks!
