Redirected printers not showing in Devices and Printer - unable to change defaults

$

We have a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Server and are having problems with redirected printers on it. The problem occurs for users running the RDP client from Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Users are connecting over a WAN connection and are needing to print to their local network printers. The printers are connected successfully to their local workstations, and the option to redirect printers is selected in the RDP client. When users remote connect to the server the local printers show as available from within an application, such as Word, and they can print successfully using them, however they don't show in the Devices and Printers in the remote desktop session.

The problem is they want to change the default settings on the printer to be single-sided B&W and the default is Auto-color, double-sided. This can be changed manually from within the application but it doesn't stick once they log off and back on again.

Following the recommendation from this link:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/243942  I was able to change the defaults by going to the redirected printer in Devices and Printers and making the change under both Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults on the printers, then waiting for at least a minute before logging off and the settings are persistent for that user through a logoff and back on again.

We had major printing issues with this server and printers when using the Windows Easy Print driver as they constantly randomly never printed jobs, and Microsoft Support concluded we needed to disable using Windows Easy Print drivers first and load matching drivers on both the local workstation and the server. This resolved the problems they had re the non-printing, but it meant changes to the default settings had to be made on the redirected printer as above, as changing them on the local printer doesn't carry through the redirection.

I was able to configure the redirected printers at the time as they showed up in the Devices and Printers, but for some reason they don't any more. The changed defaults have stayed persistent for users that the change was made on, but they now want it made for new users. Also checking for existing users they no longer have the redirected printers showing up in Devices and Printers either.

There have been no changes to the server that I am aware of that would cause the printers to no longer show up. Directly attached printers show up OK, just not the redirected printer. Checking the device manager does show the print queue for the redirected printer, and as mentioned earlier, it's available to print to.

I thought perhaps copying the registry configuration of a working configured printer and loading that each time a user logs on to the Remote Desktop Server might be an option, but the redirected printers change the redirection number each time so they wouldn't match.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to either get the redirected printers showing up again, or configure them for persistent defaults would be greatly appreciated.

RDS 2012 R2 print spooler issues

Hello everybody!

i have a problema with print spooler in 2012 R2 environment.

RDS users (with disk profile) have connected printer with a 2012 print server. Sometimes printspooler seems to be blocked cause applications like Acrobat Reader DC gives an error no pages selected to print. Same user but different application (Foxit for examples) doesn't see any connected printers.

Tried many application settings but nothing resolved. After i have restarted print spooler, everything is back to work.

No events in application or system events. only in printservice/operational i got some error events:

event 221

source printservice

task enumerating printers

detail: Retrieving CSR cache information for printer \\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\M5035 failed, error code 0x2. See the event user data for context information.

event 812

source printservice

task Executing a file operation

detail: The print spooler failed to delete the file C:\Windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\00009.SHD, error code 0x5. See the event user data for context information.

event 603

source printservice

task Client-side rendering

detail: The print spooler failed to reopen an existing printer connection because it could not read the configuration information from the registry key SIDxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\Printers\Connections. The print spooler could not open the registry key. This can occur if the registry key is corrupt or missing, or if the registry recently became unavailable.

Windows search not working server 2016 remote desktop

Hello

Platform: Server 2016 RDS desktop session host running multiple applications.
Note: The Windows Search Service feature is not installed

Problem: Local search not working
Users began complaining of not being able to search messages in Outlook with the generic massageOutlook cannot perform this search. The email account are Exchange online accounts, so clicking Find More on Serverdoes find and list the messages.  Up until recently they could search and list messages in Outlook successfully.
Also, Searching for a single word document on the desktop also doesn't work. So it looks to me there may be problem with SearchIndexer.exe, though this is not obvious in the logs

We are getting messages in event logs for Outlook including the following:

  • Search cannot complete the indexing of your Outlook data. Indexing cannot continue for C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\[Username](error=0x80470015). If this error continues, contact Microsoft Support.

and

  • Event ID 34: Failed to get the Crawl Scope Manager with error=0x80070015.

Any help here would be appreciated as the client is becoming testy..

Server 2012 R2 TS CAL's are installed but are not being issued

I have a very simple Server 2012 R2 set-up. Just want 5 users to log in on a per user basis.
The same server is the session host and licensing server.

The Users can log into the Terminal server.

The Open Licenses are installed but they will not issue.

RD Licensing Diagnoser has 2 warnings.
1. The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured.
And
2. Set the licensing mode on the Remote Desktop Session Host server to either Per User or Per Device. Use RD Licensing Manager to install the corresponding licenses on the license server.

Have Googled and Bing'd this and seems like so many of us are having TS licensing problems, between this and Windows 8.x I have to ask, does Microsoft hate us all!?

Some users do not get the licenses from the Terminal Server

Hi!

I have Terminal Server Windows Datacenter 2016 with 100 Enterprise licenses on it but only one user can issue the license. When I connect with other users it seems that I connect to simple Remote Deskop so if more then 2 other users are connected I have to disconnect one of them because of limitation of the Remote Desktop.

All users belongs to the same groups. The only difference is that the user who got the license has Windows 8.1 and others have Windows 10 but I tried to access from Windows 10 with mstsc ver. 6.3 and got the same result - doesn't get the license.

Please help.

RDS CAL problem connect more than 2 user in the same time - SERVER 2016 ESSENTIAL

Windows Server 2016 Essential, clean installation, licensed, activated, in the workgroup.

Installed the role of Remote Desktop Services, Remote Desktop Licensing Service and Remote Desktop Session Host.
RDS license server is activated, a license for 5 users is installed.

In group policies, the license server is specified and the "per user" mode is selected. The licensing diagnostic tool does not find any problem

I can not make RDS to the server on just 2 connections. If I try to connect with 3 distinct users the server disconnect one of them.

There are no error records in the logs, the license manager shows that no licenses have been issued and 5 licenses are available.

I just need more than 2 people to be able to rdp into the server at the same time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

2012 R2 User profiles are multiplying user, user.000, user.001

This is a new 2012 R2 server and the user profiles are multiplying user, user.000, user.001 or user, user-backup-0, user-backup-1.

The server was working fine for about a month and then the profile issue started.

I'm now getting 1 user that is now getting a Temporary profile when she logs in.  I checked the registry and there are no .bak listings in the user profile section.

The event viewer only mentions 1 error about the user getting the Temp Profile.

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

Cannot Reconnect to RDS Session on Server 2012 - Remote Desktop Services are currently busy

I am experiencing an issue with Server 2012 RDS. This is a VM running on a 2008 R2 Hyper V Cluster.

The issue seems to only affect one user, but he is the MD.

While trying to re/connect to a remote app, the screen will instead display -

Remote Desktop Services are currently busy

Although sometimes you simply just get a welcome screen that sits there doing nothing instead. It is not an easily reproduced issue, so I don't know how or why it seems to happen, just that rdpshell.exe sometimes spikes in usage and the session can/will not sign off (by either Administrator or the end user)

He will then be unable to log in until I reboot the server, which will not actually restart unless I do a reset.

I would very much like a fix for this, as getting everyone else to disconnect so I can reboot is not really a fix, and I'm sure the MD is not happy about it either.

Unable to delete files within a User Profile Disk

Hi All,

We have the following problem, we are running a Windows Server 2012 (non R2) Session Host server using User Profile Disks. A user creates a new folder within their "Documents" folder, this new folder contains different file types eg, PDF, ZIP, DOC.

When the user tries to delete a file of the entire folder they are prompted by UAC. The user is not able to delete without an Administrator account confirming the UAC prompt.

We have checked the users security rights, the user has full access to the new folder and all files within.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

RemoteFX USB redirection requirements

Hello,

I have created a GPO to enable RemoteFX USB redirection from a Windows 10 client machine, which has been applied to my PC.

When I log into a 2012 R2 or 2016 server however, the RemoteFX redirection icon does not appear on the connection bar. In some cases, it does, but I cannot determine the difference between the server machines to figure out why it does not work to all remote machines.

Can anyone advise if there is something that needs to be set server side to allow RemoteFX USB redirection FROM client devices?

Many thanks

Network Level Authentication bs

Today I tried to connect via RDP to one of my Virtual Servers (Windows Server 2012 R2), and I ran into this message : "The remote computer that you are trying to connect to requires network level authentication (nla), but your windows domain controller cannot be contacted to perform NLA. If you are an administrator on the remote computer, you can disable NLA by using the options on the remote tab of the System properties dialog box."

How am I suppose to make that change if I can't even log in to the server? Why only now did this message come up, I've had this server running for months, wth.

how to add Short cut to DISCONNECT and LOGOFF

We have an App that requires Remote Desktop Services

Having installed & configured it.

We asked the software company to setup App. This work fine in Desktop session i.e users login via mstsc and get presented with a desktop. But unfortunately not as a Published App.

Users will only run this one App on the Terminal Server (I was hoping the published App would work to keep things simple!

So if we have to use a Desktop I need to place a couple of items on the Taskbar

(1) Sign-Out
(2) Lock
(2) Close / Disconnect

I have taken away the Server Manager - yikes why would anyone think users should be able to access that!

anyone know what functions / programs to call or if this can be done with scripts ?

VDI/RDS not completing

I need a little help. I'm in a VM learning Windows server 2016, and I'm trying to create a VDI. It will go all the way but when it starts on the Progress screen, the then says

"RD Connection Broker could not create the computer account object in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Ensure that the RD connection computer account has permissions to create computer accounts in the organizational unit (OU), the RD connection broker server can contact AD DS, and duplicate computer account object does not exist in a different OU."

I've been banging my head and can't find much online. Anyone knows how to resolve this? Thank you!

Azure RDS Random Disconnects

$

We have about 60 users that connect to a Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Server Collection in Azure. A couple times per week, many users (not all) who are actively using the Servers will get disconnected from their RDS session. They are able to reconnect and get right back into their profile and open applications.

We can't find a pattern or figure out why the disconnects are happening. The disconnected users are in different cities and on different Session Hosts. Not all users get disconnected.

Environment:
Multiple Sites, site-to-site VPNs to Azure
Several Servers in Azure, Domain Controller, Application Servers etc.
4 RDS Session Hosts, 1 Collection - Server 2012 R2
2 RDS Connection Brokers in HA Mode - Server 2012 R2
RDS Gateway & Web Access Server (not used for internal connections) - Server 2016
RDS User Profile Disks & RDS Licensing on File Server - Server 2012 R2

We have Group Policy set for:
End session when time limits are reached - enabled
Idle session limit = 2 hours
Active session limit = 12 hours
End a disconnected session = 3 hours

Any ideas?
