RemoteApp/TSGateway Through Proxy

$

Hi,

We have been asked to use a customer's Remote Desktop Web Services (TS Gateway) to launch a RemoteApp application from their RDP servers over the internet. However, we use a proxy server on site here for internet access, and it seems like RemoteApp apps do not take proxy settings into account... which is a bit of a huge oversight if you ask me. Hopefully I'm just missing something and there is actually a way to specify a proxy for the RemoteApp apps.

We can get onto the customer's Remote Desktop Web Services site, and see the list of apps available, but when we click on one it just opens up an RDP client window that says connecting and eventually times out. If I try it from a PC that is allowed directly out onto the internet without using the proxy then it works fine, and I've unblocked the domain completely from our proxy web filtering system (and confirmed via Wireshark that it is not trying to connect to any other URLs or addresses during the process) but still get the same issue, so it looks like the problem is just that RemoteApp doesn't go through the proxy you have set in IE. Is there any way we can tell it to? Any registry settings etc?

Thanks

Chris

RD WEB Access using *.domain.com wildcard certificate

$

I have a simple setup of a single RD Web Server with the gateway role also installed. I then have 4 session host servers that host remote desktop and thats it. My internal and external domain names are the same domain.com

Everything is 2008 R2 sp1

My Web address for RD WEB = remote.domain.com

RD Web/Gateway server = tsw.domain.com

Session host = sessionhost2.domain.com, sessionhost3.domain.com, sessionhost4.domain.com, sessionhost5.domain.com

I have a single Wildcard certificate *.domain.com

this certificate is installed on the RD Web/gateway server and also on the each session host server.

My issue is i keep reading on different sites and forums that on when singing remote apps with a certificate "The server name must match what is specified in the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate for the RD Gateway server"

Im not sure how this is possible with a wildcard certificate?

So my issue is i can sign into remote.domain.com and see my published remote desktop without issue, when i click on the remote desktop icon i get prompted by a windows security box to enter credentials to connect to tsw.domain.com. This i unexpected?

I fill in my credentials domain\username and password and get past this, then i get theexpected security pop-up to enter my credentials to connect to the sessionhost5.domain.com. i am able to put in my credentials once again and the remote desktop opens.

The first popup listing the RD WEB/gateway server is my concern, i should not be getting prompted to connect to the gateway server. So my question is it really possible to use a single wildcard certificate for all of these roles?

RDWeb Connect to a remote PC - dual monitor

Over the same LAN, I can directly RDP to other workstations or servers and dual monitor works fine.  If I initiate the same connections through RDWeb, single screen only.

If I understand correctly, RDWeb is basically generating an RDP file that gets downloaded through the browser and opened using mstsc.exe.  Is there a way to customize this temporary RDP file to specify span or multimon?

Thanks!

RemoteApp on RDS Gateway not using proxy pac file! (works with IE proxy exception!)

Hi there,

We have a problem with Windows 2008 RDS services

The RDS server is server.domain.local (for example)

When launching RemoteApps and using a pac file... it attempts to connect to the server via the catchall proxy in the pac file (even though the whole domain is set to go direct) - confirmed via proxy logs - it says https connection on server.domain.local

The server.domain.local/rdweb page loads fine on the same server so we know IE and goes direct (confirmed with TCPview) so we know IE is reading the pac file corretly

We also know IE is using the proxy specified in the pac as no matter what IP I put in for the proxy in the pac it uses it.

However:

If we put in *.local in proxy exception and untick the proxy pac... it works

It looks like RDS is having trouble reading the pac file.

Anyone experienced this and know a fix?

Problem Installing a SSL Certificate on a RD Server

I'm trying to install a 3rd party SSL Certificate (GoDaddy) on my RD Session Host server (2008 R2).  I generated the request through IIS, received the cert from GoDaddy and imported it into [Certificates(Local Computer)\Personal\Certificates].  I then went to RD Session Host Configuration,  and RDP-Tcp, and chose to select certificate.... however, I'm not given a choice...instead I receive a dialogue box saying "There are no certificates installed on this Remote Desktop Session Host server".  Any ideas why I cannot choose the cert?  Do I request the cert improperly ?  I'm stuck here...  thanks in advance for any tips!

RD Gateway Manager for Internet connections to Remote Apps

I'm trying to setup Remote Access to a Windows 2008 R2 server so that Internet clients can have secure access to run an app. in a remote session on the same machine.

If possible, I'd like Internet clients to only have access to remote apps, not desktops. I'd also like admins to only have access to remote desktops on the LAN not the WAN.

I've installed Remote Desktop Session Host, Licensing, Gateway and Web Access, all on the same server, and seem to have everything setup correctly. I'm able to connect clients over the Internet with RDC and Remote Web and run the App. The problem is that I don't know how to setup the security restrictions and don't understand why I can never see any connections to the Remote Desktop Gateway. It seems that the only thing which is controlling access is membership of the Remote Desktop Users.

Any help on how I can configure this correctly would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Simon

Remote Desktop Licensing Protocol error

I have spent the last 4 hours looking for solution online including Microsoft sites. So unless you have an EXACT match of solution to problem DO NOT tell me to TRY this or that in any article as I have probably already read it or tried it.

OK onto the issue.

Brand new 2008 R2 SP1 standard Dell server. All updates applied. Joined as a stand alone server to domain. Remote desktop role installed. License server role installed. License server activated. 10 Per User RD (open License) Cals installed. Remote Desk Host Diagnostics gives clean bill of health. No other roles etc. installed. This is strictly a TS server.

Workstations are Wyse thin clients running Windows 7 Embedded. They can see all allowed resources on domain. they can get to the internet as well. network connectivity and navigation confirmed.

So.... When I start up RDP client on said terminals I get error of: The remote computer disconnected the session becase of an error in the licensing protocol.

Remeber this is a Windows 7 embedded. hacks to registry or file copy from other OSes do not apply.

And yes I checked with Wyse support.

other Misc data:

 No firewall activated on server

using the administrator account to attempt logon as it is already included in group. (Should not matter as it is a LICENSING  PROTOCOL error anyway)

It is part of a 2003 domain.

No I have not edited GP on 2003 system.

Yes the event log has been reviewed. I see NO entries for this issue.

IDEAS?????

When logging in with RDP for the first time to our W2012 Terminalserver from any x86 workstation you get the screen to change your password and everything works fine. When doing this from a W7 x64 workstation we get an error-screen  "Remote desktop Connection - You must change your password before logging on the first time. Please update your password or contact your system administrator or technical support."

are there any idees or hot fixes to solve this problem?

How do I demote a domain controller that has Terminal Server on it and then add the server to a new domain?

Hi

I have a 2008 domain controller with Terminal Server on it that needs to be demoted and added to a new domain as a server with terminal server on it. I know how to demote a DC and I know how to add a server to a domain. I have read articles about moving Terminal Server but I am unsure of the best way to do this. Also what is the best order to do this and are there any "things" to watch for while making this transition?

Your help is apreciated

Where in Windows 2012 R2 do I find RDS client session information?

$

The Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Collections view gives me some information, but in Windows 2008 R2 and earlier I could also see the following per client:

1) IP Address

2) Host name

3) Screen resolution and depth

4) Client name (PC name)

5) Client build number

when right clicking on a name and selecting Status in Remote Desktop Services Manager.  Where do I find similar information in Windows Server 2012 R2?

RD RDGateway 2012

Can someone in simple terms help me out with RDApp issue which is driving me mad.

I have an RD Web server explodes to the internet. If I hit the site with IE (from the web) I can log in and see all of my apps but when I try to run then the RD client cannot find the server. I think this is because the .rdp file contains the local name of the server which is secured behind the firewall and not exposed to the web. OK that makes sense.

So I installed a gateway server and exposed that to the web but if i point a browser to it using https://address/RDWEB I get a 404 error, I had assumed that the gateway would securely proxy connections to the web server. Wrong i guess.

So do I need to expose both the web and gateway server to the internet and manually configure the gateway settings in every users RDP client?

I had assumed it would work in a similar way to Citrix where the settings are sent to the client via the web portal.

Cheers,

Andy

Emptying all users' temp folders

Hello everyone

Right now we're having problem with low disk space on Terminal Server. Actually we have applications which help us to get rid of all temp files easily, I mean without going to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp and deleting files manually These are

  1. Profiles Scanner
  2. ICSweep

But these applications cannot remove any item just because I do not have permission to Edit this folder inspite of fact I’m belonging to Domain Admins group. I can break security of a userfolder, but it is quite time consuming. There're about 700+ userfolders in  C:\Users\ folder. Moreover, we have a lots of trojan name "DWH****" (**** is random number, like 3D25, 5C68). And this file seems duplicate itself into different name and that's why we have low disk space error on our Terminal Server.

So my question is How do I empty C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp folder without changing the security on userfolders? I tried to empty through GPO (Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Folders) but I couldn’t get this work.

          Thanks in advance

Terminal / Remote Desktop Server 2008 - The user profile service service failed to logon. User profile cannot be loaded

I have just installed a new Server 2008 Remote Desktop/RemoteApps server. We have been trialling various remote applications successfully with minimal issues until this morning when I got a report in that a new user could not open a remote session.

After troubleshooting this, the user in question, and any other user account attempting to log on to the server through remote desktop or a remote application session would bring back a logon message “The user profile service service failed to logon. User profile cannot be loaded."

Event logs show -

"Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning correctly.

DETAIL - The system cannot find the path specified."

According to forum searches this can be due to user profiles being deleted but the SID remaining in the registry. In this case the users attempting to log on have do not have a SID entry.

Also permissions to the User profile path are correct and have even been given an "everyone" group full access to the folder and subfolders as a test.

A folder has also been created manually within the Users folder to see if this would make any difference. Still the same log on issue.

I can also confirm that the users attemting to logon are successfully authenticating on to the domain according to the security event logs.

I am now at a bit of a dead end, as new users could log on and user profiles were created fine until this morning.

If anyone has any useful suggestions or insite to this issue it would be much appreciated as I am running out of hair to pull out.

 Thanks in advance

WebFeed configuration on a Windows 2012 Session Host

$

Hi all,

I have a simple RDS setup (Connection Broker, WebAccess, Remote desktop collection...all running on Windows 2012).

My remote desktop collection has two Session Host servers (W2K12). I would like to use the Webfeed feature so the users can have their apps published in their Start Menu in their session based desktop. However, when I go to Control Pannel / Remote Apps and Desktop Connections and enter the Webfeed URL (https://rdwa.xyz.com/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx), I get this error: "An error occurred.  Contact your workplace administrator for assistance".

I can't find anything in the Event Viewer. I get this error only on the Session Host servers. All Win7 desktops and stand alone W2K12 servers work fine. Can Webfeed even work on Session Host servers?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jesmat
